Photographer's Note
Acoma "Sky City" is a pueblo atop a mesa about an hour west of Albuquerque and ancestral home to the Acoma people. They say they have lived here for two thousand years, which would make Sky City the oldest continuously-inhabited place in North America.

The Acoma are renowned for their pottery; I am embarrassed that I failed to learn this artisan's name. This sale display was expensive beyond my budget, but I should have bought it all, as it is highly collectible. The present value of the dozen or so pieces in this foto probably exceeds $20,000.

This foto was originally shot on 35mm Fuji Velvia. I an unaware of the present arrangements, but at the time (20 years ago), there was a fee to visit Sky City, plus a separate "camera license" fee for taking fotos. Then, of course, one had to negotiate with the people who would be in your foto. I remember paying a few dollars for the pose from these people.

Interesting note. I never heard of these people before maybe because I haven't paid to hear about them!
Nice ethnographic document from their everyday life though it kind of looks like a "this is for the tourists" type set up.

and i had no idea as to the value of their pottery, what a great surprise to see something native american so valued (for a change.)
i love the mood and colors of this... and wonder what it would look like with only the old woman in it ... her grumpy old expression feels more real to me than the smiling woman on the left, as it tells me she could care less that there is a camera pointed at her :)
thanks for sharing this interesting glimpse into sky city, its art & culture ~
