Photographer's Note
We had made a trip to St. George, Utah, and weren't thinking about going to Zion NP, but the view over through the storm was magnetic.
It can be such a beautiful place with the contrast of the white snow and the wet dark dark red sandstone. There are always interesting shapes from the trees in the bottom of the canyon.
The temperature was TOO COLD to be using a metal tripod without gloves. What I would have given to have had my wooden tripod!
I placed the exposure for Zone III on the lower values of the dark sandstone. I wasn't concerned about keeping detail in the shadowed bark on the trees. I had to contract development to keep from blowing out the brighter snow values. TMax can provide significant density if not carefully controlled.
I used a K2 filter to reduce red and cut some of the haze from the moisture in the air. A future note, I would use a strong filter as it could have raised the red values some.

Very effective exposure application. Did you visualize the dark rocks (I thought sandstone, even in shadow, was lighter). But for this pix, it just came out beautifully. I like the general composition. And yes, you really didn't have to tell anyone it was cold. It just looks frozen.

You succeed in doing a good contrats between the dark rock an dthe withe snow and threes. It's very sharp. Well done

Fantastic view, Dana! There's a touch of Ansel at all :) Great depth and structure of the rocks. Very well done.
And I now knows about one more reason NOT to ignore my Berlebach tripod ;-)

We've been in the park about two years ago but winter was not already there. It changes everything... and it remains beautiful. Nice shot!

that is one of the most compelling b/w's I've ever seen. the snow and the rocks together are quite remarkable. its not every visitor to the park who sees these sorts of beatiful conditions. thanks for freezing out there for us!

I came by this photo through a discussion regarding infra-red photography in which your use of a filter that reduces red was referenced. I'm glad I came across the discussion because I missed this image, which surely deserves more attention than it has received.
This is a stunning capture Dana, beautifully presented! You demonstrate wonderfully both the excellence of the equipment you use as well as your skills behind the camera. This is crystal sharp with gorgeous tonal range, and all this within 200 kb. Amazing! I would love to see this image in a larger, printed format.
I have a casual friend whose work appears quite regularly in Sierra Club publications who has told me about his treks into the wilderness in extreme weather conditions, often hiking for hours with his camera equipment strapped to his back to capture a scene at the perfect moment. You speak of the cold you encountered. All I can say is thank you for making the effort. This is wonderful!

Stunning shot, Dana. I'm off to Kenya for holiday this year, but I think I'll be visiting the mid-west of USA in the near future! Paul.

You've captured Zion's beautifully. Clear photo and I like the B&W. Nice job!
