Photographer's Note

Mount Shuskan 9,127 feet, reflected in Picture Lake's mirror surface. The Mount Baker Wilderness area is located in northern/central Washington and within the Cascade Mountain Range, a famous group of mountains including, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Saint Helens, Mt. Hood, etc. This Cascade area is accessed more easily in late spring via Highway 542, about 62 miles east of Bellingham. In the winter there is a ski area named after Mt. Baker 10,778'.

This wilderness is uncrowded once you get away from the 'drive & stop & drive' visitors. There are many hiking trails, adding up to 200 miles. My favorite is Heather Meadows between Mt. Shuskan and Mt. Baker. This location was the locale for scenes from Clark Gable's flick, Call of the Wild, and Robert DeNiro's The Deer Hunter.

A bonus is tube floating on the south fork of the Nooksack River, or with a white-water rafting company from Glacier to Deming.
