Photographer's Note
Sorry for the delayed post. I hope this Fall and Winter will allow me to post more photos more often.
Barns are vanishing in the U.S. Old barns like this are simply cheaper to replace than to repair or restore. It is unfortunate. I envy Europe and her buildings that are hundreds of years old. I think that in the U.S. we have a throw-away mentality that drives us to replace rather than to preserve or restore. Even when government grants are available to help farmers repair and restore, most farmers and barn owners still simply wait until the barn collapses, then they haul it off, sell the barn wood, and build a new one out of aluminum. This barn will fall in a few years, if the owner does not do something to keep it up.

David, perfect sentiment, great shot. I think in Missouri or Illinois or both it is now not legal to tear down an old barn because of the historical aspect. As a cabinet maker by avocation I love it when this old seasoned timber becomes available so there are definitely at least two sides to this...

A black & white beauty...
Perfect note to suite what you had in mind when you shot the pic and the good thing is you made it reflect in the picture. The dramatic cloud formation looks as if it says a horrid story of the future awaiting this barn...

Hi David, I'm not sure whether you applied some special processing to the sky, or whether it was just like that - but it looks very good. Seems to be some kind of radial effect centred near the barn.
There's a line to be drawn between appreciating the beauty of what's aged, and artificially preserving *anything* that's old. I understand your comment but I think we, in Europe, often cross into the realm of chocolate-box fantasy... and that's hardly better.
I think what you feel about this place can't be preserved - the transience is its essence.

hello David,
a nice processed bw composition, I like the cloudy sky where we can guess the quick movemenet of the clouds.

Hi David,
good note and better capture (in all positive meanings). It is like you took every single pixel and changed it in an appropriate way. Great sharpness and contrasts, but also a very pleasant composition with the barn a bit protected by the grass and that field and its lines on the left.

Hi David,
I'm not a B&W expert, but this looks awesome.
The light is simply incredible!
Are you sure your name is David and not, by any chance, Ansel?
Ciao,
Fulvio.

Hello David! There is so much soul in these old barns and you made a wonderful tribute to a time that will not return. Maybe one day we will take out your photo and reminisce about the "good old days" but I am afraid they already have arrived and maybe we should let them go. A tearful process that does change our landscapes forever being replaced by boring houses that spread out in all directions. Oh well, just some thoughts :) I love the shine on these mountains back there but also your excellent cloud work "on the move" ... Barbara.

Hi David, a superb BW image with ideal contrasts, black is black, grey is grey, white is white.
The sky is very impressive and makes a nice atmosphere.
Best wishes.

I suppose some things are worth preserving and others not. There are plenty of things pulled down in Europe too.
Thankfully this barn is still there to provide you with an excellent subject. Very well composed on a third; the barn even has its own little lead-in line. The light on the mountains and the barn itself is very good and that is a wonderfully dramatic sky.
Good work

Hi David. It's odd how much that barn looks like the one from Mormon Row. Yes the barns on Mormon Row weren't in much better shape than this one either. It's a sad fact about these falling into disrepair. This was a perfect shot to make a b/w and you worked your usual b/w brilliance. That sky is incredible. Have a great Sunday!

Hi David,
Truly amazing photo! So intensely dramatic, so well composed, so well exposed (it's remarkable how it looks so highly contrasted and at the same time it is so rich in greys)! Impressive sense of depth and space. You used very wisely that strange light that doesn't look that easy to control.
I also feel sorry for the disappearance of those barns.

Hi David!
This one is simillar to your image " barn to be wild" and I like it too.
I never thought about landscape photography in B&W,but seeing your shots,I΄ll try one day.
Good placement of this barn and a nice view at the mountans in the distance. This dynamic sky gives a great depth to the image.

Hej David
Yes I think there's a mission for anyone having a camera. to capture all of this buildings that soon are gone just of the reason you say. the thing is new ones seldom have the same design and cultural treasure is gone.

Beautiful PP work, David, to bring out the best in every section of the image. The distant hills just seem to glow in the sunlight. The sky is spectacular--not realistic, perhaps, but B/W gives you a lot of license. (How did you darken the sky so much without introducing noise?) It really is a beautiful barn, and you're right that it's a shame to lose such things. But I imagine it would be quite expensive to restore such a place, as the wood would get dry-rotted and pest-eaten out there so exposed. Regards, Ken.

Hello David,
another of your black and white images, which I like very much.
On one hand, I am fascinated by ruins, abandoned houses and buildings that have seen better times, like this old barn. Then there is this clouded sky and the very special light that you have captured.
The scenery is great. This picture looks very dramatic, is extraordinary, has a very special charm.
Have a great week
Peter
