Photographer's Note
Wow, it's good to be back posting at TE again!
This is at the north end of the Great Salt Lake, a few miles south of Promontory Point, where the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 in the desert well north of the lake. A few decades later, they built a causeway and trestle across the Great Salt Lake itself. Called the Lucin Cutoff, it cut off about 6 hours travel time from the journey either way, east or west.
The trestle was replaced by a causeway--a gravel roadbed built up from the lakebed--in the 1950s. The deepest part of the Great Salt Lake is only 34 feet deep (about 10 metres). Some of the old trestle system is still in place, though. These were probably telephone poles associated with it.
A company has recently purchased the scavenger rights to the pilings, which after over 100 years of curing in the lake make for very good and expensive lumber. Soon they will be gone, like much of U.S. history. I hope they will leave a least a few of the pilings for future generations to see, but I am quite cynical about it. These will probably survive, since they are harder to get out of the ground than the pilings in the water.
The mountain in the background is actually an island: Antelope Island; it is a popular vacation place for hiking, biking and other activities.

Quite a surreal scene, it looks a bit like a Dali painting with these strange objects sticking out of the ground. While clearly man-made their texture now shows a likeness to the dry ground, they are slowly returning to a former state. The very sharp, clean and detailed presentation adds to these qualities. Nice to see a new posting from you.

Hi David,
Very strange view. These poles, literally in the middle of nowhere. The softness of the mountains make them look like some dreamy paradise compared to the dry and abandondoned desert (if you can call it a desert). Your composition with three poles works well.

Hello David,
Stunning image - you really mastered composition and tones; together with good contrast it makes a good (almost documentary) photo.
Colours are superb, especially of the island, sky and the mirage!
I'm trully pleased with your subject and most useful note!
Thanks,
Robi

Hey looks who's back...
Nice to "see" you again David. This is a well balanced shot that has nice levels and good use of proportions. The light in the foreground is very interesting.
Nicely done and I hope to see some more soon.

Hi David! Wow is it great to see you back! This is quite the shot looking much akin to abstract art. It looks like something Salvador Dali would paint. The depth here seems to go on for days. I also love the emptiness of this place and it's nice to see the Great Salt Lake making an appearance. The colors are absolutely surreal. BTW you might enjoy my shot on my intro page called "Arches Vertical Fin". I think you'll get a kick out that. At any rate it's indeed fantastic to see you back and please keep them coming!

Hi David,
Nice to see you posting here again !
A very empty and lonely place, this great salt lake, and these makes these rising wooden pieces even more impressive, reading your note it carries the feeling of humanity slowly disappearing in the ongoing process of history written with the planet scale in mind, a photo that rises thoughts.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi David, really nice to see you back on TE.. I missed your shots.
What a strange landscape . those poles are making me a bit uneasy, nervous.. Don't really know how to explain myself.
This is very nice. Great light and very nice framing.. A mysterious image..

Very interesting note, David. I like to see how these man-made structures return to the ground over such a long time. I thought to try a b/w workshop...

Hi David, it's great to see you back on TE, welcome back!
I really missed this kind of photos of yours.
I like this salty plane and the efect of the brown and blue colors and contrast in the sky. the tilt of burried timbers gives a feeling of a disaster, or at least add some dramatic effect.
Excellent shot, great PP work and a fantastic composition. A very interesting note, too.

Hi David
Superb pp work in the sky, & well composed, with attractive lighting, & good sharpness. I like the diagonals of the leaning poles in opposition. Well done!

Welcome back, David, it's been a while indeed. I really like the compo you made here with the diagonal pilings not only creating foreground interest, but also framing the scenery in the background really nicely. The balance you found for the contrast and sharpness on this one is nothing short of perfect. Well done.

A fine series of shots from that barren ground - I like the almost unreal mix of sky, cloud and light of the poles - thanks David for taking us here - a fine view.

David, your previous shot made me wonder through you gallery bit deeper and somehow I really enjoy this picture. I really like that lonelyness that can be felt from your photo. Well composed too. L.

Very impressive composition and colors, looks like a painted illustration to some fantasy book.
The only thing I think can improve the composition - extending the picture to the left, so the end of the currently cutted shadow will be seen.
