Photographer's Note

While exploring the banks of the Deschuttes River (at sunrise) for some prime fishing holes, I stumbled (literally!) on these two sharing a "private" moment in the brush:-). Actually the Great Horned owl and Red-tailed hawk pictured are often known as mortal enemies, and this picture is proof. The first thing I saw was the hawk, which was still alive, breathing and blinking its eyes. Upon closer inspection I nearly suffered a heart attack at the sight of the owl resting near his defeated foe (I was four feet away!!). Fortunately I had my camera on me, and captured what will forever be known as my once-in-a-lifetime photo. It is taken in black and white, because color played little relevance in this fall seen (very bland), and the b&w really pulls out better detail.

I realize this should be on the "Trek Nature" site, but this is a rare wildlife shot, and for that it stays with the collection.
