Red Mountain & Blue Sky
South of Ouray Colorado along US Highway 550
Last summer I spent a couple short days back in Colorado (on our way from Northern Minnesota to Southern California) ...
People often ask me If I miss the mountains since moving from Colorado .. My answer is yes, but more than the mountains I miss the high altitude blue sky .. (especially here along Lake Superior where it seems to be gray and cloudy 350 day a year).
The Milion Dollar Highway is a 25 mile stretch of US Highway 550 in Southwestern Colorado between the towns of Ouray and Silverton. It is an incredibly narrow and steep road .. often with immensely deep drop offs into the Uncompahgre Gorge
The elevations is high .. peaking at Red Mountain pass at an elevation of 11.099 ft. (3,383 m). My wife was having a tough time with the high elevation but she did indulge me in some quick photos ..
The highway goes by several remains of old mining operations (look carefully and you can find some in this image) .. and three high red mountains .. creatively named: Red Mountain 1, Red Mountain 2, and .. you guessed it .. Red Mountain 3.
There is a dispute over the origin of the name of the highway .. one story is that it cost a million dollars a mile to build .. another explanation is that the fill dirt contains a million dollars in gold ..

Hello John,
Wow, this blue sky is limpid and superb, contrasts with the geology of the ground is impressive. I imagine that even in estival period the temperatures must be moderated, I see snow on the heights. Beautiful and contrasted photo, thank you for the interesting note John.
With all my friendships and excellent Sunday,
Jean-Charles

Hi John,
Excellent shot, I guess the pass must be fairly high for the saphire blue of the sky is crystal clear as if there is no particles in air between heaven and earth. The warm earth tone contrast perfectly against the sky. I'm particularly interest in the Colorado image, since I'm looking into planing a trip there this year, if all goes well in September or Oct.
Beautiful shot, great quality technically and nice to sea a sunny photo from you, you must be missing the warmer days badly. Hang in there, it's almost here.

Hello John,
good image of this mountain, the sky is beautiful, I like the forest trying to cover the peak. When I lived in Texas I missed the mountains too...
Have a good day,
Sergio

Hi John
Oooh that CPL filter has done its job here. The colours are wonderful and rich and so unmistakably American. The sharpness and depth are superb, I can account for every pine needle in that forest :) Great job, thanks for sharing and I wish you a beautiful weekend.
Cheers
