The small pier in the primary post exists to service the many offshore oil rigs. A disastrous oil spill in January 1969, was a major impetus to the environmental movement. For eleven days, 200,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the channel. It fouled 35 miles of coastline and four of the Channel Islands. In the spring following the oil spill, Earth Day was born nationwide.

Only days after the spill began, Get Oil Out (GOO) was founded in Santa Barbara. Founder Bud Bottoms urged the public to cut down on driving, burn oil company credit cards and boycott gas stations associated with offshore drilling companies. Volunteers helped the organization gather 100,000 signatures on a petition banning offshore oil drilling. While drilling was only halted temporarily, laws were passed to strengthen offshore drilling regulations. Unfortunately, the Bush administration has fought all regulation on oil drilling both here and in the fragile tundra of Alaska. Increased spills can be expected. The most recent one occurred December, 2008m where 'only' 1000 gallons fouled 1.5 miles/2 Kms of the coastline. Source

When driving south from Oregon or San Francisco on Highway 101, we always love it when we break through to the coast at Gaviota Beach just north of Santa Barbara.
On this evening, the sunset/moonrise coincided for stunning views.

In the WS are views of the Railroad trestle at Gaviota, the first beach I visited in California and a view of the tracks at sunset. You can take a train from Seattle to Los Angeles Union Station for $98. Of course it takes 36 hours and the train cars aren't that good for sleeping. In the winter for $210 more, you can add a roomette. I've taken this train from Chemult, Oregon; there were no roomettes available so it was a long 24 hours. The best part of that trip was through the San Francisco Bay Area since it was dark by the time I reached this part of the trip. A less strenuous coastal trip is from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano or Anaheim, this takes a little over an hour. The Ventura to Goleta section is also very nice. The whole trip from San Diego to Goleta takes 6 hours and costs $33.00
