Photographer's Note
I was playing around a lot with laying the camera on the ground around sunset and shooting with a really long exposure.

Hi Joel.
I just read your 'intro' and understand that you are just beginning your interest in photography. I hope you'll take what I'm about to say in the spirit in which it is intended - i.e. constructively.
You haven't stated what type of camera you use but I'm assuming it's a fairly straightforward point and shoot type digital camera? Irrespective, cameras are nothing but tools - they will only do what you tell them to do or what you allow them to do is you use automatic / programme modes.
Photography literally means 'controlling light'. That is the singular purpose of the photographer and your camera is the means by which you'll do (or not do) that.
My suggestion is that you look through the TrekEarth galleries and write down:
- names / aliases of the photographers whose work you like
- exactly why you like the photographs
- the types of equipment used
- whether flash was used
- whether a tripod was used
All of this is available, assuming that the photographer has recorded it.
You might see a pattern emerging to help you decide whether you prefer landscapes, seascapes, street photography, candid portraits, etc. One or more of these will appeal, I am sure.
Armed with this - and some data about how the photographers achieved the result they posted, if it's possible to do so, se if you can start to create the same effects.
Sorry if this sounds a bit regimented and pompous but I spent my first year or so wasting film (that was the mid-1970's) and getting nothing out of my efforts.
Photography is where science meets art. You own a really useful tool and have the opportunity to show the world what you can do with it.
You just need to learn how to get the best out your camera and study this site, magazines, books and films to decide what direction you want to follow.
As for this photo:
1) It looks like the flash has triggered (whether you wanted it to or not).
2) The blades of grass in the foreground are over-exposed and blurred.
3) The skull - whilst slightly interesting - is not recognisable and you've missed a bit at the top
4) The background is too dark to be distinguishable.
If you've made the effort to join TE you must be interested in what goes on here. Spend some quality time getting to learn about your camera, the people who use this website and what sort of photographer you want to be.
Best wishes for 2008 - and I really hope you carry on and post some shots that show us how you view the world.
Paul.
