Photographer's Note

A shot from the middle of the San Marcos River. It's a popular river in Texas to go tubing down in the summer, and there are 2 places that rent tubes, or you can bring your own. You start upstream and drift down and get picked up to do it again (as part of the tube rental price or for a small fee).

The river has abundant plant life both above and below the water and is quite shady. In some places the underwater plants are so thick and go so close to the surface it's hard to swim, although the tubes go right over them.

The San Marcos river is spring feed so the water is quite cool all year long even on the hotest Texas summer days, but after that first plunge it isn't so bad. It's that first plunge that will wake you right up! The water varies in depth but overall isn't that deep. There is a current, but not it's not over-powering.

The river travels under several bridges one of which can be seen here. There are also several parks that line the river, some with picnic areas. One of those spots can just be seen on the left side of the picture through the break in the trees.

Technial stuff: I had to use a disposable waterproof camera for this shot. It is a basic point and shoot camera. No controls whatsoever. You also don't have a choice in film speed. Overall, the picture quality isn't nearly as good as my regular camera, but then my regular camera would not have survived the trip downstream.

My biggest problems were keeping water drops off the lens and the fact (due to the current) I was constantly moving, both down stream and rotating. This means framing the shot was mostly a lost cause.

I had to some cropping, levels adjustment, contrast masking, and dust spot cleanup. I also used a new tool I found recently called refocus to sharpen it. No unsharp mask was used.
