Photographer's Note

Morning, New Years Day, Jan.1, 1997 in Times Square. The evening before we had been at this spot to ring in the New Year with the crowds on the Square. The temperature had been quite cold (although nowhere near as cold as back home in Montreal). After the countdowns to the countdowns and the clock struck midnight, the crowd threw up their hands and roared and then the moment was suddenly interrupted for me as an empty flask of Southern Comfort that some overly enthusiastic celebrant had let go off struck the side of my head and hit the ground at my feet. Luckily, my temple was hit by the flat side of the bottle, so I was stunned but not seriously injured. Our week-long stay in the city was nonetheless a very interesting and enjoyable one. The first time you enter Times Square you feel as though you had just arrived at the center of the world.
