Photographer's Note

tobacco barns

are a common sight in new england country-side. here is a set of features they usually have in common: gabled; predominantly wood-frame construction; rectangular in shape; they are fitted with means of ventilation, usually by hinges that permit cladding boards to be opened either horizontally or vertically; they usually have roof ventilators and sometimes clerestory-style vents that run almost the length of the roof ridg, sometimes evenly spaced cylindrical vents with conical tops; their interiors have framing in bents about 10-15 feet apart on which lasths loaded with tobacco leaves can be hung; they often have doors in both gable ends, creating a drive-through structure; it is typical for new england tobacco barns to be located at the edge of the tobacco field, at a distance from the other farm buildings; new england tobacco barns are usually not painted, plain wood structures.

for the time i have lived in new england (and it's quite a stretch already), i have been fascinated with the local tobacco barns. i find them quite photogenic, but, in the past, have not been able figure out a way to show them "in an interesting fashion". so, here is my first shy attempt at a portrait of a new england tobacco barn.

please note the lush green surrounding the building. it is not typical for massachusetts to have green this lively in august. moderate heat and abundant rain last summer explain the state you see. usually, by mid-july most green obtains significant yellowish features here due to heat.

ps. you can see the cladding board opening (mentioned in the general description) supports on the right side of the barn, but i could not take a more detailed view of those due to disadvantaged light at the time.

as some people have suggested (myself including), there is a lot of "empty space" in the left side of the photo. i chose to leave it in because i felt as if this space was needed to create a feeling that the tobacco is welcoming the sun. however, i understand people's preference for tighter view. i have posted a workshop photo to demonstrate another version of the same view: this time, much closer to the door.
