The remaining Etruscan era gate in Volterra is shown here. The Etruscan walls are outside the newer 13th-century walls; these inner walls were constructed once it became clear that the older walls were too long to be defensible. This gate is decorated with three heads, very eroded, believed to be the heads of Zeus, Castor and Pollux.

Hello Roger,
This is a very attractive composition that benefits much from the lovely warm light around the impressive gateway. I like the contrast between the sunlit walls and the shady street on the other side of the gate. Superb rendering of the tones and textures.

interesting note about the 3 heads, i'm glad to see that they didn't restore them...it is what it is :)
the walls have kept up well though throughout the years.
love seeing all the stonework, and despite the harsh lighting conditions it turned out well.

Hello Roger - What a super shot. I love the composition with the beautiful old archway framing the shady street with its neat houses. One is tempted to walk through the gate and explore what lies beyond. Fine light management and detail. Very good work! Warm regards Rosemary

You too like the images through the arcs. The beautiful Tuscany (I married one of them....), I have a special regard for this kind of spots. The wonderful past opposite the low present...sob!
