Security Dog, a photo from Porto, North

Photographer's Note

This is a simple and classic view of the Douro River at Ribeira, the famous Porto city old neighbourhood.

It was taken on a rainy and cold winter day and shows a Rabelo boat used in the past to transport the wine from the Douro Valley to the wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the only authentic Port Wine is made and exported throughout the world.

On a ιtι inspirιs par le mκme sujet ce matin. Je l'ai vu ce pays typique au cours de ma ballade en bateau. Tu me rappelles de bons souvenirs qui ne sont pas si lointains.

He looks pretty menacing--I hope you got out of there safely with your camera intact! The place is still picturesque even in the rain, with gray-day atmosphere giving a real-world non-postcard take on the place. Ideally the dog would be closer and more prominent in the image, but maybe that would be too much risk...Regards, Ken.

That's one hell of a ferocious looking guard dog, a bit over fed maybe.
Lovely shot, not withstanding the bad weather. Having comsumed the odd glass of Port it's interesting to see its origins/history.
The muted tones work well in describing the day.

Hi Antonio.
I think you have a first class composition here, with the boat nicely placed, part of the bridge included to add colour and perspective, and of course the dog. I like him/her being in the corner of the image. The bright colours of the boat add something to the scene on this grey day. I visited Porto 31 years ago, and remember its being a city with a beautiful setting but rather poor in those days. I would like to go back.

Ficou muito boa esta foto com o Rabelo e as casas de Gaia na outra margem, gosto do pdv escolhido com a inclusγo do fim da ponte. O cγo foi 1 bom extra, na ϊltima vez que estive no Porto fiz 1s fotos similares mas faltou-me sempre esse cγo para dar mais "vida" α coisa :-)

Oi Antonio,

Uma foto interessante rica em detalhes. Adoro a inclusao do cachorro, ele parece nao ter gostado muito de estar sendo fotografado. So achei o enquadramento um pouco fechado, quase nao ha espaco entre o cachorro e o canto esquerdo assim como na parte superior...

Lembro-me bem destes dias chuvosos...no dia anterior estαvamos os dois na Batalha ;-) O barco ι bem bonito e estα muito bem colocado na composiηγo. Parece uma pessoa lα atrαs, mas acho que ι demasiado pequena...O cγo ι um belo detalhe e vκ-se que estα de olho em ti. Pena as cores deslavadas, mas nγo hα nada a fazer quando estamos a passear e o S. Pedro nγo ajuda.

O casario ao fundo parece pintura, estα muito bonito. Gosto muito do barco no primeiro plano tambιm, chama a profundidade ΰ tona ;-)
Mas o cachorro estα o mαximo, parece que estα em posiηγo de ataque e digo que, se fosse eu a fotografar, nγo teria saνdo nada que prestasse, pois eu teria ficado com medo do cachorro chegar perto ;-)

- Too small the dog for security Antonio but this makes opportunity to shoot a nice picture, this must be a barge to transport the famous Porto, to consume without temperance ;o)

Nunca fui visitar o Porto, mas quando vejo estas fotos fico com vontade de lα dar um salto, mas como sou mouro nγo sei se serei bem recebido :)
Como tens referido noutras ocasiυes o teu mκs de fιrias (Janeiro)nγo ajudou nada no que diz respeito ΰ fotografia,falta sol e cιus bonitos, mas tambιm se fotografa no inverno nγo ι verdade.
Gosto da composiηγo embora com um PDV um pouco apertado,mas o primeiro plano esta muito bom.

Dominant yellow colour on the Rabelo goes very well with the weather and the texture of the other side of the river, Vila Nova de Gaia. Luckily, you've managed to include this posing little dog which makes your composition very very lovely.

You have avoided most of the dull sky in this composition to give more view of the river/boat and the slope of buildings.

I like the blue steel bridge giving a link to the river in the frame. The dog looks to be your final composition decision, so it fits your title.

This is a wonderful photo!
I can definately tell the cold atmosphere,
yet a very inviting one.
I love "role" the dog is playing here,
it seems like it guarding its boat.
The composition is excellent too. We can

I had once seen a night shot of the Rabelo boat carrying wines...that was a night shot. Well composed with the inclusion of the bridge on the left as well as the curious dog. The yellow/black bands of the boat is very striking indeed. well done!

Decorrem neste fim de semana neste local o festival aιreo ( Red Bull ), em seguida serα na Austrαlia. Em todo o caso nγo vou assistir por ser no Porto. Recentemente andei no novo metropolitano e assim nos deslocamos com mais rapidez. Em crianηa na cidade de Ιvora muitas vezes a minha avσ ia buscar a garrafa de vinho do Porto para me dar um cαlice. Esse cheirinho intenso nunca mais o senti e esqueci. Talvez o bom vinho seja o de reserva. Nesta zona o visitante pode fazer os passeios fluviais nos barcos Rebelo. Falta-me fazer o que vai ΰ Rιgua. Parece-me que o cγozinho deu pela sua presenηa. Cumprimentos. Domingos

very colorful image. I find it interesting the right part of the river seems gray almost same as sky that s a key nice point.the gran cruz boat and houses across the river are really positive impacts on the photo.
