Photographer's Note
I am sure we all get that feeling sometimes: "this is probably not going to be one of my popular TE postings, but I like it" - and sometimes I have been proved wrong with some great responses to work I thought was more personal than universal.
I wish I knew the story behind the deflated balloons on the floor: Humberstone is a ghost town in the Atacama desert - which has acquired UNESCO World Heritage status and is enjoying a second boom in popularity as a day-tripping destination.
It originally grew around a nitrates mine when the fertilizer and armaments industry made the dry, desolate North of Chile a premier investment destination. With the invention of synthetic ammonia, the industry collapsed - with management moving on to jobs in other industrial sectors and the miners moving back in to poverty in a jobs-poor area of the world.
The balloons and door in the background work for me on a number of metaphorical levels, but feel free to add your own story behind this picture.

"this is probably not [going to be] one of my popular TE postings, but I like it" I can subscribe that sentence....
I think the photo talks by itself, for those who have ears to hear and eyes to see... in its simplicity and emptiness it speaks loudly and clear...
there may have been parties but surely not love and care.
Ciao,

Hi Iain,
I know that feeling, how many times do we stand there and look at the mess that was left after the party is over. There is a little sense of sadness and solem mood after the event. This photo depict that atmosphere perfectly.
Althought I think I would have like to see the top of phot by itself, without all the deflated balloons and mess. That would give a whole new composition and atmosphere. and I think it would also be a really good photos. Because i like the look of the old door.

Ciao Iain
perhaps I am conditioned by the history that you have told us, or perhaps the symbols that you have used for your photo is not possible to misinterpret. or they have a universal sense. I believe that its title speaks it for everyone. and for me the door, every door, are always a symbol of passage and change between a situation and an other. this is a photo that uses the symbols very well, it puts them in row, it coordinate them, thus it creates a story. I like me a lot.
thanks for sharing
ciao

dear Iain,
maybe the habitant family had the most happy time there some or many years ago,
every ghost town have various great days surely, even it was very tiny town or big ancient city,
but now all are far away, it remains the abandoned symbol only,
we feel our very destiny on this view indeed,
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

hi Iain
po vsaki zabavi je potrebno pospraviti. ko se veselimo ne razmiljamo, da je dobro če pazimo na red in čističo.
zanimiv POV in predstavitev.

Iain...this is so a sad story. But I love your image. This is the story of the most part of the humanity. When the party is over. And the party is over so quickly!

Hello,
Nice perspective here, the colored ballon parts on the foreground contrasting with the striped floor really give a good guide to the "backdoor".
Very Good, Regards,

Thanks Iain
By the low angle of sun and the mess, I can tell it was an overnight party in a clandestine bar raided by the police!!
I like funny posters!
Cheers.

Bonjour Iain,
J'aime beaucoup cette photo qui raconte une histoire. La fκte est finie, chacun est rentrι chez soi avec des souvenirs de joie et de lumiθre alors que sur les lieux il ne reste au sol que quelques ballons de baudruche dιgonflιs.
Amicalement

Hi Lain
very evocative and sophisticated composition : the contrast between the washed out walls and the vivid colors of the balloons, the pattern of the wooden floor, the overall quiet refrained atmosphere.
Have a nice day

Hello Iain,
This is a very symbolic and aesthetic image indeed. As your note reads, this place seems to have much in common with the Chernobyl Zone in Ukraine. Very interesting idea, which was realized perfectly!
Best regards,

This ones has a strong atmosphere. The party remnats littered on the floor, in a ghost town... that all makes the imagination working!

yes, sometimes we love an image and it isn't so loved how we think they would deserve and sometimes we think that photo isn't special and it got lots of sucess.
Here I liked the way you framed the scenery, with the remainings of the party in a side and the open door in the other, there isn't personages here but we can feel the sense o movement. nice image

Hi Iain, great title...as this taken from your position under the table after a hard night's partying? ;) Either way, it's a good POV and leaves me with a sense of nostalgia...and possibly regret, what do they call them, "post party blues"? Anyway, good work with the DOF and I like the differing textures of the walls and door. Half opened it leaves alot to the imagination. Great job, enjoy your Sunday, Lisa.
