the ''pont vieux'' at Confolens

Confolens is a town in south-western France, located in the department of Charente (Poitou-Charentes region). Place of history and culture, is known for its festival.

The area was inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by many megalithic monuments. But there is no mention of Confolens until the eleventh century.

Confolens was located on the old Roman road from Angouleme to Argenton - Bourges, where she crossed the Vienne. The hypothesis of an ancient bridge at the site of the Old Bridge was issued, following the discovery of remains in the eighteenth century.

The agglomeration of Confolens was created by the lords of Chabanais, and she was split in two by the Vienne and each bank depended on a different diocese, Limoges east, west Poitiers. This two dioceses is extremely rare: it shows the situation of this border town.

In the twelfth century, fortifications were built to protect the principality of its powerful neighbors: the Counts of La Marche and Poitou. Confolens was the seat of a commandery of the Order of Hospitallers of the Holy Spirit in the twelfth century and eighteenth century, the chapel was used by penitents in 1656.

In the sixteenth century, it emancipates itself from the tutelage of Chabanais. Construction halls affirms its role as a hub between the coast that provides salt, Angoumois and Saintonge who give their wines and Limousin, supplier of leather and wood.

She became the barony was erected in the county in 1604 by King Henry IV.

In the seventeenth century, three major religious institutions are built on the outskirts of urban areas the convent the Rιcollets, the convent of the Poor Clares and the home of the Sisters of Charity.

The border between the langue d'oil and langue d'oc passes twenty kilometers west and north of Confolens is in the Limousin''
