The Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows is an important Catholic place of worship located in the municipality of Castelpetroso, Isernia, and belonging to the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Bojano.
According to the testimony of the visionaries, the Virgin Mary first appeared March 22, 1888 to two shepherdesses named Serafina and Bibiana in Cesa between Saints, on the slopes of Mount Patalecchia. This first appearance was followed by others and, following the recognition of this phenomenon, Pope Paul VI proclaimed patron saint Our Lady of Sorrows of Castelpetroso Molise on December 6, 1973.
he nineties of the nineteenth century, it was decided to build a shrine at the site of the apparitions, but further down than this, that he might be more easily reached by pilgrims. The project was entrusted to Joseph Gualandi, whose death (1944) was succeeded by his son Francis.
The day September 28, 1890 was laid the first stone and began the construction of the sanctuary. It proceeded slowly because of economic problems and the two world wars: in 1907 it was finished and opened for worship the chapel of the Poles, but the perimeter walls of the church were brought to fruition in 1950. In the following decades he completed the sanctuary It was consecrated September 21, 1975 by the Bishop of Campobasso-Boiano Alberto Carinci.(translate from WIKI)
BASILICA DELL'ADDOLORATA.
La Basilica Santuario di Maria Santissima Addolorata, o semplicemente Basilica dell'Addolorata è un importante luogo di culto cattolico situato nel comune di Castelpetroso, in provincia di Isernia, e appartenente all'Arcidiocesi di Campobasso-Boiano.
Secondo la testimonianza delle veggenti, la Vergine Maria apparve la prima volta il 22 marzo 1888 a due pastorelle di nome Serafina e Bibiana in località Cesa tra Santi, sulle pendici del Monte Patalecchia. A questa prima apparizione ne seguirono altre e, in seguito al riconoscimento di tale fenomeno, papa Paolo VI ha proclamato Maria Santissima Addolorata di Castelpetroso patrona del Molise il giorno 6 dicembre 1973.

Essa procedette a rilento a causa di problemi economici e delle due guerre mondiali: nel 1907 fu terminata e aperta al culto la cappella dei Polacchi, ma le mura perimetrali della chiesa furono portate a compimento solo nel 1950. Nei decenni successivi si completò il santuario che venne consacrato il 21 settembre 1975 dal vescovo di Boiano-Campobasso Alberto Carinci.(wiki)

Lì, con lo sfondo della foresta, mi pare che la Basilica ci stia come i cavoli a merenda. Amen e così sia. Comunque la tua foto, che sembra uno strano patckwork di natura e finto gotico, è molto scenografica! Bravo Luciano, come sempre.

Quite often in the past Virgin Mary appears to the poor people and then the church is built on the site. If these people could paint, it would be interesting to compare the images. I like the pale colours.

I didn't know about this history, and curiously in the day of my anniversary. the shapes of the church are similar with cathedral of são paulo, but proportions are different.nice angle contrasting the architecture with nature.

Hello Luciano,
A fine composition featuring this splendid looking Basilica. Close framing puts the accent on the subject. I also like the contrast between the dark green tones of the surrounding forest and the greys and light greens displayed by the architecture. Very well exposed with excellent colours and clarity. Interesting and useful accompanying note.

se per questa composizione hai usato lo stesso punto di vantaggio che vediamo in workshop, hai fatto un lavoro magnifico. I dettagli dell' architettura sono superbi ed hai tagliato il quadro in maniera efficacissima. As always, you have written a fascinating and informative note about this magnificent church as well as showing us three lovely photographs of it.
In your main picture the church and its accompanying buildings stand out like a jewel against the darker background of the forest in it autumnal colours. The light and colours are beautiful, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite.
I love images from church interiors too and your workshop photograph of the interior of this lovely place of worship is delightful and you have managed the low light levels perfectly.

Like so many religious buildings, this took a long time to complete.
However, it was worth waiting for, because this is an exceptionally beautiful building.
It is so different from its background, that it stands out like a crown, situated on a cushion of greenery.
You have captured its details finely and positioned it strongly in the frame.

Hello Luciano,
It's a magnificent church in a wonderful environment- The roofs match the colours of the forest quite well. You couldn't do anything to the slightly disturbing modern buildings but you could have cloned out, or cropped, the tiny glimpse of another building on the left side ;-). Otherwise it's a fine photo with superb light.

Taken from a very good angle showing the towers and the dome nicely on a row.
The hill slope with its beginning autumn tones is a wonderful background.
On a closer look this basilica turns out to be gigantic.

non conoscevo questa Basilica, strano gotico, ma tutto sommato piacevole, forse il particolare che colpisce di più è il colore bianco, di solito siamo abituati a vedere questo stile su costruzioni in pietra scura.

Bellissima la basilica tra tutti gli alberi. Hai trovato un bel POV. La cornice stretta mi va bene, ed anche i colori pallidi. Devo dire, pero, che mi da un pochino di fastidio la roba che entra la cornice sulla sinistra. Magari e un pezzo di tetto?? Anche il WS e bello. C'era poco gente.

The basilica places with a grove around, so its modern part contrast both the green surrounding and the older style domes and towers. Whoever picked this place to build it, did a marvelous premeditating job.

maybe not the best of lighting conditions, mother nature wasn't really on your side, but you still came away with a fine shot.
but obviously, the key is the fact you left out the sky and the ground, focusing in on just the trees as the backdrop - smart choice.
