Photographer's Note
Abby is a professional Spoonologist ~ one of only a handful in the entire United States. Playing the spoons falls under the category of "Old Timey Music" and is very evocative of the mountains and Appalachia.
At first the idea of playing the spoons may seem overly simple, and something just about anyone can do if they have a pair of spoons handy. But in Abby's hands, a simple pair of spoons becomes "a "complex rhythm instrument."
A little history from Abby's website: "Spoons belong to a class of instrument called concussion idiophone, the oldest instruments known to man. Spoons themselves are prehistoric, there have been spoon players since around the invention of the spoon.
Many ancient cultures have played spoons. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all played spoons and a variation of the spoons called the rattle bones or the rhythm bones ... Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all played spoons and bones in their battle marches and some even speculate that human bones were used. During the crusades, when these armies were marching the clicking or the bones and spoons meant to their enemy that "the pagans were coming" and it was time to prepare for battle, or to even run and hide."
Abby busks (plays for cash tips) all over the country - from San Francisco to Chicago, Atlanta, Portland and New York. But we are lucky to have Abby as one of our regulars in the Asheville street music scene.
Yesterday afternoon, I caught Abby playing on the streets downtown with Banjo Ben. By her left foot, you can see a small shop bell. Any time someone puts some money in their bag, she steps on it, two pings of appreciation.
Abby is missing many of her teeth (for reasons unknown), and this gives her mouth a much older appearance than she actually is. Judging by her skin, I think Abby may only be in her late 20s, early 30s.
Abby and her spoons are a lyrical whirl of motion.
Please treat yourself to listening and watching Abby playing the spoons ~ it will amaze you! http://spoonladymusic.com/

Hi Kristin. The first word that ran through my mind when I saw the image was Appalachia. She seems to be quite a character and by the looks of her wiry appearance, lifting those spoons has kept her fit.Interesting note and photo. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Kristin,
Thanks for this unique and flavorful photo! I like the total ambiance of the scene: the clothing, the instruments, the smile on Abby's face. This photo prompted me to watch some videos of their music, and it's really cool and fun to listen to. This photo definitely pulled me in. :-)

Great look at a fun artist! Just slow enough shutter to show some movement -- well done!
What ink, too! And at her left foot -- is that one of those little "Ring for Service" reception-desk bells? What a great musical addition!
Good note, too, Kristen!
Best regards,

Hi, Kristin,
Have to agree with Klaudio. Her appearance screams, "Appalachia". (being from West Virginia, I'm fairly familiar with that) Great light, color, detail... I like the sense of movement and the two of them seeming to so enjoy the music they are making. Very nice moment you caught. Many thanks and kindest wishes,
Shelly

Hello Kristin,
I guess that when others mention Appalachia, they actually hear the soundtrack of Deliverance in their heads. At least I do, and almost get the creeps. These people look harmless enough, but you never know... ;-)
Abby looks happy but clearly life must have been tough on her (for reasons unknown). She is very expressive and you captured her at a fine moment when the gestures of her hands almost make me hear the sound of her spoons.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Kristin,
Very interesting capture. Good composition and framing. Very creative tattoos the spoon lady is wearing. On wrists its like jewellery. Its so nice to see her playing with full enjoyment. The way they are sitting together and playing is creating a harmony. Those metal pieces in the background is adding a different feeling to the ambiance. And really very nice informative note. I like that.
Thanks for sharing.
Warm regards,
Shadan

Hi Kristin,
Queue up some Soundgarden...it may be a woman featured here, but I keep hearing Spoonman in my head! :) Great shot of these two, cookin' up some hometown tunes of which kitchen utensils are used as an instrument. Loving this setting too, the twisted metallic backdrop gives this a junkyard charm that seems so very fitting for this scene being played out.
So much character and life portrayed in this image, and another wonderful depiction of the real, every day life moments that most would pass by. You certainly have a great intuition to capture these opportunities, and I'm glad you share them here with the rest of us. Just one question though, where's her right foot? ;) Don't let anyone give you any grief over that, it's a delightful image! Take it easy,
Jason

Hi, Kristin,
Good photo series abouth folk music,
I like this picture, vivid colors, fine details. Hmm, before I thought that a play spoon is old Russian folk tradition. I have got a few examples of the picturesque wooden spoons. Excellent report!
To the point, I am going to the US on September.
Best wishes,
Serghei

Hi Kristin
This is so good! a wonderful opportunity well grabbed and accompanying story, I love the straight forwardness capture too no messing about. Sheis in a world of her own fully focus playing the spoons and her banjo man is really doing his best to add something, ticking all the right box and tugging all the right strings. There's a good sense of the way musicians interact and of energy and rhythm and their jolly characters. It is such a simple photo, yet the quality is just perfect. You have this way of shooting lots of different subject and they all turn out so well and this is seriously brilliant portraiture & street photography. Nice work Kristin, Congrats and tfs
Best regards

Hi Kristin
Strange how the socio-historical origins of playing the spoons varies from the US to the UK. Playing the spoons is traditionally viewed in stereotypical cultural memory, at least, as the trait of a working class northern person from towns like Wigan in Lancashire and possibly has a musical hall variety aspect that popularised it. Now, it is such a rarity.
