Photographer's Note

Early evening light falls on a log strewn deserted beach on Pender Island. There are really two islands - north and south - but are usually referred to as one, even though the ocean canal separating the islands was dredged wider by engineers in the early part of the 20th century, rendering passage possible for small boats. Pender is the second most populous of the southern Gulf Islands, lying between the lower mainland of Vancouver and environs and Vancouver Island. The permanent population is around 2000, which more than doubles in summer when part-time residents and tourists swarm to camp, kayak, and cycle the area.
