Photographer's Note

Boundary Pass is a wide channel which forms the boundary between the United States and Canada for a portion of the border that dips below the 48th parallel of latitude. This is the main shipping lane for freighters and cruise ships heading for the port of Vancouver from both Asia and southern points in the USA.

The waterway straddles the Gulf Islands of Canada and the American San Juan Islands, which are areas of tremendous beauty and home to a wide variety of sea life, including several unique species. There are several pods of resident Orca whale populations and it is common to see whaleboats filled with people travelling to key vantage points where the whales commonly gather.

These waters form a single ecosystem which is seriously threatened by pollution, and in fact fishery stocks have been declining steadily in recent years. Aside from pollution, the warming of the sea water by only one or two degrees has drastically affected sea life. This area is also home to a large number of resident bald eagles.
