Photographer's Note
...or, an art of following someone in the street
Closely observed
Hey, Trekkers.
Allow me to present YOU to YOU.
I don't know YOU. Neither I know the people on these photographs ( Well, with the exception of this young, American-Vietnamese actor , Dustin Nguyen "V.I.P" TV series, mingled with the Toronto's crowd )
Yet... In every single case there was something prompting me to jerk my camera up to my eye and start shooting. I'm not going to confess to the world what that prompting was. For I believe each of YOU will know her/his own version of "why" I've snapped them.
There will be very little information provided.
As I said: I don't know the crowd.
Please spare mi technical stuff like: grain, noise, colors, etc, because I couldn't care less. These are the live people, not the still objects I have time to compose before start shooting them.
Some excerpts from the critiques:
Oh, man…I adore the photos of the posters on the streets… (???)

I can see you in this shot.
Congratulations.

Hej George. A good street scene, with this woman looking back at this man, this fascinating figure against the wall with his indifferent expression and posture. I am not so sure I like the presentation, though. Why not just the shot? Why have it sectioned off?

Hi George
Nice photo, I like the way you have captured the diversity of this multicultural city of Canada.
I had written a note about the demographics of Toronto in my previous photo and your photo seem to have captured that diversity so very well.
good photo mate .... I like what you have captured here.
thanks for sharing this incredible photo
bye for now
regards .... sarju
PS: Like Don, I also don't like the sectioned off PP, but as you say, it is a people shot and I don't really care much .. have a good night !!

Czlowieku,
dawaj tego Lance'a na TE. GENIALNE.
Wogole uwielbiam takie zdjecia z plakatami i ludzmi.

Ciekawy pomys³ i realizacja. Pozdrawiam, Krzysztof.

As you say. The anonymous faces shown are all extraordinary, without exception. But since we're all exceptional, as human beings, we end up deducting that common people are, after all, unique. I love your photographs, George, that meaning I love the way you look at the world.

I see us through him, through them. Two different worlds falling apart into a million worlds.
Terrific image, it's very you...very us.

Niezle.
pozdrowka

a jak dla mnie to podoba się taki "intelektualny" eksperyment ze zmuszaniem do gapienia sie na gościa który też sie gapi, mam takie wrażenie rewanżu w stylu "no i co teraz powiesz? nas jest kilkuset?";
a z drugiej strony takie wylowienie gościa z tlumu rozebralo go z anonimowości tlumu trochę, no i dobrze;
ps. coraz bardziej zaczynam smakowac też twój styl pisania not, daje do myślenia

Nice street shot, esp. of the bearded man.
The man in the tanktop looks very much like actor Dustin Nguyen (if it isn't him, the likeness would be uncanny).

Świetne masz te fotki z ulicy... ludzie gdzieś jadą i focą pomniki i zamki... a najciekawszy obiekt wszędzie to ludzie... niby inni a tacy sami...

pozdrawiam jeszcze raz

That's a neat trick you played here with that division in the photo to isolate the weirdest of the guys depicted. Of course, he would have got our attention anyway... :-)
I like this one a lot, and the way you presented it. Strong characters here, no doubt!

Watch out, Big Brother is watching.....
Tobie to wsio rawno...bo jesteś WIELKI.
Całuję, Anka

I had missed this one before (well, you posted it a year before I joined TE). i like this 'crowd control' you have imposed upon the scene. but how on earth did you manage to get that lady to gift you this coy posture pointing directly at the 'big brother'? good stuff.
best

Wow, what a strange fello there. Definitely he provides the punch to the image. I also like the interaction between him and the woman passerby. As usual, excellently framed showing the street pulse.
cheers,
