Photographer's Note
Now branching out from Sana'a, I did a 3-day trek around the Haraz Mountains. I started from Manakhah (about 2 hours east of Sana'a). The Haraz Mountains are simply incredible. Trekking around the mountain villages perched vicariously on cliffs was definitely one of my highlights.
Unfortunately it was so hazy being in the summer, so my photos aren't as good as I would have hoped. I hired a local guide to take me around to the villages, and did he ever. We started at 2250 m (Manakhah) and declined through a few villages down to 1500 m. Then, setting back uphill finished at our final destination, a village at 3000 m. Trekking for 12 hours, I was exhausted. But the sights I saw were unforgettable.
This is a village (unfortunately I forget the name, as I saw 8 villages a day) that I passed through on the way down, and eventually walked past again.
As for my title...well, these villages are so unique. Very untouched, where electricity is a premium, and wells are sometimes still used for water. From afar, they are absolutely stunning...but walking through them, past all the garbage piling up, and buildings crumbling you can feel the impending doom. How long can these villages truly stay untouched, away from the eyes of foreign tourists, greedy for a "new" experience. Yet, I am one of these tourists...and I almost hestitate to post photos of Yemen, introducing it to the world which has so far left it alone. I try to be different, traveling locally...staying with locals, trying to speak to them in Arabic. I'm not in a huge tour group, who will be leashed along like the several I saw in Sana'a. But regardless, my presence affects them just as a big tour group does.
For me these birds (Vultures makes a better title doesn't it... :P) are the western influence, waiting for the village to crumble so they can pilfer it. Or waiting for the way of life here to change, to disappear forever. You can tell things will change there, it's unavoidable.
Sorry for my tirade against western tourists...haha, I can only do it because I am one!
Looking forward to some comments.

Hi David. This is a good shot and the vultures in the air add to the appeal of the image. The fortified building on the cliff's edge is awesome. Such an excellent location with impressive views of the water. As for the haze, I don't see much of a problem with it. The colour of the sky seem ok. Thanks David.

Hello David! Wonderful composition and note. Without the birds this is a great shot but the addition of them makes it more special. Your POV really emphasizes how the village literally clings to the cliffs. The sharpness is very good on the architecture but not so sharp at the bottom of the frame. Perhaps a little of the bottom could be cropped to reduce the unsharp area. But it's really great as is.

Nice use of the focus/unfocus area. The result is very pleasant. I'm very surprised to see so green area in a country so dry.
Nice shot,

A nice epic sense of space! I like the vultures - that just adds to it all. An amazing rock fort - shot against a beautiful sky. Well done with this one!

Excellent POV from below. We can really particpate to the vultures activities by realizing the verticality of this place. Colors are beautiful. Really well done.

Hi David!
Very nice composition! The vertical framing was a good choice to include the beautiful sky with lots of birds creating a good dynamic. The different patterns of green, rocks and sky create nice contrast, and the architecture is very interesting.

Hi David.
Yemen, so many images comes to my mind and a longing to visit this country.
An image that just reinforces the feeling.
A strong image, the vertical emphasizes the height of the village, a medieval look or even more ancient, and a mood from the vultures that makes the photo into a very good one.
Tourist are not always a bad thing, but I do agree that a large group leaves no chance to interact with the locals.
Have a good WE

Hi David,
The picture works the POV really gives the magestic impression about the village. But what really caught my attention were the vultures around it. The message you pass is a tought or us all...
Cheers,

David, a great composition with that POV looking up the rock with visualization of the city and the clouds and vultures framing the whole scene. The upper portion is razor sharp but not the bottom. Maybe increasing the f/ would have corrected that part.

Hello David! Very well done! This is an impressive place, and the birds (whatever they are) add to the interest greatly. Your note, so informative, and your thoughts about tourism preying on villagers is a great plus. I love the composition, it's fantastic and out of the beaten track. Good light and colours, though the green of the trees looks a bit weird in my screen.
TFS this interesting place.
Best regards!
