Photographer's Note
One of Istanbul's most prominent landmarks is the 14th century Galata Tower, an old watchtower. There are plenty of photos of it on TE but as the colour wasn't good when I scanned this version I've posted it as B&W so that makes it a touch different to other photos on TE.
In the WS is the Galata Bridge with its old market and restaurant area below the road. You can see the tower in the background.
Also in the WS is a close up photo of Galata Tower.
Scanned from negatives.

Hello Ian
A beautiful view of the tower and the houses around it. I like your choice of black and white. Clarity and exposure are well done. Thanks for sharing

Hi Ian,
Well taken and presented this famous tower, interesting effect for contrast with b&w version, good frame with the tower like focal point of view, tfs.

Hello Ian, It would be interesting to compare this view with the new ones. The tower is of course the same but probably the signs and other details are different. Good black and white picture with the charm of an oldie. I was in Turkey one year earlier but at that time I took mainly videos.
Best regards

Hello Ian,
There may have been minor changes among the buildings below the tower since 1998, but B&W makes this look very timeless. When I was in Istanbul in the 1970's the Galata Bridge rested on pontoons and swayed quite distinctly on windy days. It was also placed a few meters to the side, compared with the present bridge. I have posted a photo from 1972.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ian,
The buildings are framing well the tower. The point of view is showing the details of the tower and of the buildings. The black and white is giving a good contrast to the scene. Have a nice day.

Hi Ian,
Yes it is quite recognizable, but I would also like to have it in my TE collection someday.
Interesting effect with the black and white, at least nobody can complain that the colors are not right.
Original central symmetry, very well done,

Hi Ian,
Quite timeless looking picture where B&W fits perfectly. I checked my own photos from 2011 and it appears this are hadn't changed much. Well done!

Hi Ian,Hi Ian, two really brilliant black and white to show us what the Galata neighborhood was like 24 years ago, the famous tower but above all the bridge in 2 very well detailed visions and with the typical signs of those years. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ian,
Here are two pictures that show very well how I remember Istanbul.
Your main photo has a good contrast between the well lit and the darker parts.
It also has the charm of an old postcard.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ian,
I like photographs from our archives which capture special buildings or features and fix them in time. Our world is changing so rapidly that they become important records of the past. I'm sure the old tower will still look very much the same but, as a b&w photoraph, it seems timeless.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ian.
A wonderful B&W composition of the Galata tower, which we see here as it emerges from the grouping of buildings.
A good job. I like.
Have a great day. Very best regards.
Luis.

I liked this version in B&W, the shapes of the old town, the tower in evidence and the publicity placards created a special compo.
take care

a good scan and conversion to B/W giving the image a timeless feel although I don't think much has changed

Hello Ian,
Nice one, B&W makes it look old and there is nothing in the frame to say otherwise. I am surprised the shops of Galata Bridge were not open in the WS photo, maybe it was taken soon after the newest bridge was completed.
Regards,
MT
