Photographer's Note
the basilica cistern was built by the Byzantines back in the days of Emp. Justinian 1st (6th cent. AD). it's probably the most famous cistern in the world. there're numerous columns supporting the cistern. the main function of a cistern is for storing water.
it's also quite cool inside the cistern, I noticed at least a 5 degrees Celsius drop going underground to this cistern from the streets of Sultanahmet above.
I've noticed that there're many photographs on TE showing this place so I've decided to try a slightly different perspective, playing with symmetry and also using the two tourists to show the scale of the place better.
*I've put a black & white version in the workshop. I couldn't really decide which one is better...what do u think?

Hi Cheuk,
You're right, I've seen many photos of the cistern. But, this one is better than the others since you chose to include the two people. The light shinning up the textured column is nice. The reflection in the water is also something that catches my eye. I prefer the colored photo personally.
Take care,
Brian

I know from experience how tricky it can be to get good shots here, although I was using ISO 100 slide film which didn't really help!
You've done well here, and the moody atmopshere of the place comes across well. It wouldn't have worked so well without those figures in the background.
Good work Cheuk, and it definitely works better in colour.
Cheers,
Ben

Hey Cheuk,
Taking it from a different perspective, showing beneath the structure, the columns and notes are interesting.
I like what you did with the B&W, though it somehow represents it's 'coldness', a bit graphic showing shades and shadows of the cistern. But I think I'm leaning more into what you presented in colour. It has more intense and depth (well knowing the place), I find the tone and colour just perfect for this composition. The colour gives a more compelling story behind the purpose of this structure and feel the 'sacredness' of the Basilica. Though both images are tastefully done, it gives different views. For me keep the original posted here and the B&W just for comparison ;)
Cheers!
