Photographer's Note
Some little students went to visit the Shawbak archaeological area: a Crusader, Ayyubid and Mamluk castle. We are working in Shawbak since 2002, it is near the Ash-Shawbak village, about 20 Km from Petra (Wady Musa).
The students, standing near the second fortified castle door, are looking the desert.

Shawbak θ un sito archeologico localizzato a circa 25 chilometri a nord di Petra.
Il complesso archeologico-monumentale del castrum di Mons Regalis/Shawbak - uno degli insediamenti medievali meglio conservati dell’intero Medio Oriente - occupa una posizione strategica nel sistema viario principale che collegava il Mar Morto e Damasco al Mar Rosso, al Cairo e alla Penisola Arabica.
La fortezza, edificata sulla sommitΰ di un rilievo calcareo emisferico, rappresenta uno dei rari esempi di un castello crociato rioccupato con funzione militare in epoca Ayyubide, all’indomani della sconfitta subita dagli europei ad Hattin nel 1187. La cittadella θ dotata di un sistema difensivo complesso e continuo, con una planimetria quasi perfettamente ellittica, composto di tre cinte murarie (quantomeno nel XII secolo) intervallate da torri e bastioni aggettanti, databili dalla fondazione crociata all’epoca Mamelucca (le fonti arabe, sia scritte sia epigrafiche, danno notizia di una rifortificazione del sito alla fine del XIII secolo). Il primo circuito murario del castello, edificato per espressa volontΰ di re Baldovino I di Gerusalemme nel 1115, difese fin dall’inizio i centri del potere secolare e religioso della ‘nuova Transgiordania’ crociata, oltre a proteggere contemporaneamente anche i quartieri ‘civili’ abitati dalla popolazione residente.
Le fonti arabe bassomedievali citano inoltre un secondo (e piω grande) insediamento fortificato situato sul pendio orientale della collina del castello, i cui giardini (Shawbak era nel medioevo un luogo ricco di acqua immerso in un verde paesaggio) rivaleggiavano con quelli di Damasco, e che non θ stato ancora interessato da analisi archeologiche di dettaglio.
Il sito di Shawbak θ attualmente oggetto di indagini archeologiche da parte di un'ιquipe internazionale diretta dalla Cattedra di Archeologia Medievale dell'Universitΰ di Firenze.

nice shot with the students to watch the Shawbak archaeological area.I like the uniform cloths from the girls as the improvement of the original version to this one.Great the vivid colours and the light.But i'd like to see more of the archaeological area as Ayyubid and Mamluk castle.

I like the device of taking from behind people who are enjoying the same view. It makes the viewer feel part of the scene somehow. The composition is very good with the people on the left so we gaze across the frame with them from left to right, just like reading a book. Good work

I'm not sur that original version is not better!. Anyway, I like it because picture is larger than on WS. Really a nice pov and I like the colours with the uniforms of students against the desert. It evocates to me the question like "wher I'm coming from?", "wher I'm going ....?"
