Photographer's Note
The mystical Western Wall (a.k.a. Wailing Wall) is what remains of the Jewish Second Temple, destroyed by the legions of Titus in 70 AD, during the Great Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire.
It is considered an open-air synagogue and strictly run according to Orthodox law, which is based on patriarchal values.
Accordingly, women are confined to a small section, its size roughly one-fourth the size of the men's. It can become very crowded during religious holidays.
The men's section includes a large, long indoor praying area, along the covered part of the wall; this is very important in heat, rain or snow conditions. For women there's just a small shelter.
Women are expected to pray silently or inaudibly, so as not to distract male worshipers nearby. No Torah scrolls are allowed in the women's section.
So far, non-Orthodox movements, like liberal, reform and conservative Judaism have been unsuccessful in achieving sex equality in the site, or at least less sex discrimination.
The shot was taken just above a partition that separates between the men's and the women's sections. This was basically the only POV available to include both the women and the wall.
In particular I like the expression of the woman standing facing the wall on the extreme left.

Hi Daniel,
a very different image. I like especially the women on the plastic chairs patiently waiting their turnes.
Thanks and regards, Gerrit

Hi Daniel,
You write a excellent part story out of the old period, I learn every day on TE through the good notes. Impression how a lot young women and young girl here can see on these praying day, the sepia care for a extra adding at the picture. You did good job.

Hi Daniel,
Nice gritty, almost documentary style feeling to this shot, and nice sepia tones. It's interesting to see the women of all ages and styles of dress, united in prayer by the wall. You've captured great textures in the wall itself.
Well done

Hi Daniel,
This scene is so beyond my perceptions of the modern world that to me this old fashioned sepia approach is the only way to show it. Excellent work.

hi daniel,
i was thinking that you disguised yourself as a woman in order to enter the area :-))
isnt it true that you are not allowed to the area as a male?
interesting timeless version and in fact not so often seen - the male part, not only larger but also more often photographed, is better known;
best wishes, jerzy

I love this photo. Can I ask, how much of an area is the wall? I agree with you about the woman on the far left. And, is this the same wall where notes/prayers are left? It is great having a site like this where you can see the different cultures! Beautifully done. Very nice note!
