Photographer's Note
This mural is on the outside wall of the Bridge Tavern and is a copy of the Thomas Rowlandson engraving.
Thomas Rowlandson died in 1827 and had gambled away his earnings. His legacy to Portsmouth was his 1814 satirical engraving entitled ’Portsmouth Point’, which caricatured the ’Spice Island’ area as a haven for drunkenness, the Navy’s infamous press gangs and all kinds of debauchery.
Unfortunately there was a car parked at the bottom left so i had to crop some of the mural off.
