Photographer's Note

Taken This morning at 8 in a cold and frosty Derrymore woods in bessbrook Co Armagh. A picturesque wood owned by the National trust near that has the popular attraction Derrymore House just behind me from where this was taken.

Derrymore House in Bessbrook, N Ireland is typical of the informal thatched retreats, or cottages ornιes, boasted by many estates in the 18th century. It was built in a picturesque setting by Isaac Corry, who represented Newry in the Irish House of Commons for 30 years from 1776.

Bessbrook is situated in South Armagh about 5km west of Newry. It is passed on the S by the A25 and on the E by the B133 but neither road enters the village. The site was chosen in the mid-19th century to build a large linen factory and the core of the "Model Village" dates from the second half of that century. Most of the original village still exists and there are many modern additions.
