Photographer's Note

There's been lots of snow in most areas of the UK today, but unfortunately I have a job so I couldn't get out to photograph it. Instead you'll have to make do with this shot that I took last weekend during our short afternoon walk beside the River Thames.
Angling is a very popular pastime in this country, and on every river and lake you'll usually see someone enjoying a spot of fishing. I've never really understood the appeal myself; I usually prefer my outdoor activities to be a bit more active.
This couple seemed to be enjoying themselves though, looking out over the shimmering water as they waited for their first bite of the evening.

I took a spot-meter reading from the water (not the highlights), then set the camera to under-expose by four stops so that the anglers would be recorded as silhouettes. I was careful to place them in front of the brightest highlights on the water, but even then there was considerable burn-out.
I rather like the result, but I still think that this would have worked better if I'd used film instead of digital; the burn-out of the highlights would have been a lot less.
