Money – a sideshow at Loughborough Fair 2005
I think the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon was such a watershed – for contemporary music and for me personally when it was first released – I guess this is true for so many people of my generation.
I left school at fifteen and went to work to learn the trade of printing. The experience of having my own money - £8 for a 40 hour week – sent me quite crazy I think – I think this song – played over and over again made me sane again and I’ve never chased money since – not that £8 for a 40 hour week was extravagant even at 1970’s prices. I lived for some years (as a kid) at the end of a dirt lane in a caravan with my parents -surrounded by the south coast affluence of yachts, golf courses, smart cars and big houses – all things I’ve never wanted – when I went to University I read Herbert Marcuse and wanted these things even less – you know I really am very contented with just a camera in my hand! Of course it's all relative - I drive a car, own a house, have a good (enough) salary - but still think - wouldn't it be nice to be able to do this or that......that is luxury in itself....for so many having the financial means is a matter of absolute need.
A line or two from Wikipedia:
Dark Side of the Moon is a concept album. The album covers the faults of humanity and the pressures of modern life that can drive a man to insanity, including mortality, religion, money, the encroachment of old age, society and conflict.
Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullsh*t
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away
"HuHuh! I was in the right!"
"Yes, absolutely in the right!"
"I certainly was in the right!"
"You was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a bruising!"
"Yeah!"
"Why does anyone do anything?"
"I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!"
"I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number 2. He was asking
why he wasn't coming up on freely, after I was yelling and screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely.
It came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out"

I love the Pinkhassovian Loughborrough aspect of this lovely, layered shot, Kev. I was also verty moved by your note with its unique mix of autobiography, wisdom and wit... you spoli us at time like these.
Dark Side of the Moon was a watershed disc in my life too, and it's also where I've been working lately...(he said)

Interesting shot of faces. Two reflected, the face on the money...the mood here is quite cool. As for the dark side of the moon...nota big fan of Pink Floyd but it was a good album.

hi kev, excellent, simply love this massive attack by the 50 quid notes; their tonal range so well plays with the "money side" while your personal confession/thoughts/conclusions/wonders well balance the image with your words;
this is one of (if not THE most) the most emotionally engaged postings from you, kev, so far;
a great work;

Ah, I was right about the colour, but not about the Title. So, nothing of my north Atlantic winter holiday. Well, I can follow your philosophy of life and the (un)importance of money. Great thing is that you show the money through layers and layers which perfectly follows the song lyrics and of course the title. I am younger, but I won't agree with Rafal, Dark Side of the Moon is not a good album, it's the best I've stumbled upon in my life. Can I smell continuing of the songs from the album in your next stories?
My favourite would be "Us and them"
take care, Aleksandar

A poetry in two dimension, the color adding the third. I enjoyed your note a lot.
[When I was once a young and poor student, a Beverley Hills-residing distant relative of mine once dropped me at Caltech in a Bentley. It was my first ever ride in a Bentley (and the last, so far at least). In fact, at that time I did not even realize how remarkable that was because I had never heard of a Bentley before. When I got down, Richard Feynman happened to be walking by. He stopped for a second, looked at me and said with a smile, "When I was your age, it did not matter to me. But now it does!", and quickly walked away.]

Hi Kev. Very "Sasa-esque" reflective image, dreamy with the different layers. Nice work... good song too!

A facinating, ambigious picture. The layers and paterns seem to work so well

Great shot, Kev, with the reflection of the Queen on the banknotes, as well as the faces of the men reflecting from behind "the bars"--WONDERFUL layering, gorgeous execution! (And as you, I was glued to this Pink Floyd album (and to the others), finding membership in the British Embassy in Budapest, borrowing the LP, recording it to tape and listening to it and growing wise! :-))) Those were such precious moments!)
I love this shot, the mood, the intangibility of all the money and the 2D reflections. Great note too!

PS :)) Haha, as I was writing this, am just seeing your comment to Narayan on the right--have just checked... am very honoured... thanks...

I like the shot of the reflection upon a window that the money resides behind. It gives a strong presences of the illusive nature of money and how easy it is to see but difficult to get,keep, and if it will make you happy.
great colors, and a thought provoking composition.
thanks
