Photographer's Note
firstly i would like to thank everybody for their kind critiques for this one and as Kath says more notes were needed,Its just sometimes i have to battle with my 11 year old son for computor time.
this was taken from the English side of the 2nd Severn bridge looking towards my beautiful home country of Wales,I had to get down pretty close to the waters edge for this one and got pretty muddy which did not impress the wife.
Tripod was used with the camera set on aperature priority F22 to get a sharp image throughout, exposure was 30 seconds,I think the star effect on the lights may have come from the long exposure, perhaps somebody out their knows. On this trip i also saw a lovely heron,i just wish i had a longer lens with me.
Anybody visiting here must be very careful near the water as this is the Bristol Channel which has the 2nd fastest tide turn around in the world and is treacherous. Its also a pretty isolated place after dark so be wary, the daytime is pretty cool though with families and joggers and dog walkers in abundance.
I had a great few hours here my only gripe was having to pay to get back into Wales afterwards.
Bye for now.

David, this is fantastic. Superb composition with the bridge sweeping in from the left and it is perfectly reflected in the still water. Brilliantly rich colours, well exposed and pin-sharp. I feel a lot of points coming on here...

Hi David, on your intro page was the one of your son and brother in law, and this one looks like it, the colors the atmosphere. This is beautiful, the water is a mirror indeed, and the curve of the bridge makes a perfect composition.
Those stars, how did you get that? Is that a filter? I never managed to get that with my D70.

Hi David,
An outstanding evening shot of this great bridge. I love both your POV and DOF here. The eye is taken right through to the top of the frame and sees the winding bridge lights and masts. Exquisite lighting and breathtaking beauty. This is surely one of your best in your portfolio. Congratulations.

I can't praise this highly enough; it is absolutely stunning and goes straight into my favourites. The composition to create the sideways "Y" with the reflections is nothing short of inspirational and the colours, exposure and sharpness are excellent.

David, excellent photo with great perspective. Using a high f no. has created a nice star effect with the lighting. I particularly like the effect of the water near the rocks. This is a great photo that shows off some excellent techniques. Even though you have used a superb camera, it is your eye for the image that shines through. Well done and thanks for sharing, Garry

Hello David,
I am very impressed with the beautiful picture and the effort your put into into it (getting all mudy), it was worthwhile. As for the star effect, it is the result of the F/22 aperture. By having it small you get the star effect.

Heavy stuff Dave. Right up my street. The whole thing. Especially like the colored lights on the bridge. Nice to see you getting out more.
ps The starry lights are due to the small aperture. You probably wouldn't notice at F2.8.

Hi David,
fantastic the water's perfect stillness!
I presume that the stars are a consequence of the shape of your diaphragm, anyhow the result is grat, excellent geometry in the compo and a general atmosphere almost surrealistic.

This does make a lovely picture - particularly the colours and the glassy image in the water.
As several people have pointed out the star shape around the lamps is caused by diffraction caused by the narrow apeture used. The apeture opening is not quite circular - though manufacturers do try to keep the hole as circular as possible - and is more accurately a multisided polygon determined by the number of apeture blades. The number of aperture blades and the shape of the aperture will determine the actual size and shape of the starts.
Now the next stage to take into account is that with such a small aperture each point of light in the image is diffracted in the same way as the bright points of light. The only reason that we see the effect from a bright point light source is due to the contrast of the bright light against its background. If you take an image with lower contrast the star burst effect will still occur, however, what you will see is a lower resolving power of your lenses and less detail in the image due to the blurring caused by diffraction. The net result is that with cropped sensors and small pixel sizes it is better to use a larger aperture (f8->f4) to avoid such diffraction effects. (I hope this makes some sort of sense).
I could also go on to talk about background bokeh at wider apertures, but I think there is enough to digest for the time being.
ciao caio

Hey Yeah,
This is Kim here.
I love your photo due to its DOF. You have chosen the PERFECT angle and timing to take this photo. The water must be bloody calm for you to get this wonderful reflection on the water. Perfecto. I wish i could be with you when you took this photo. But i have one question for you, does the number of stray light from the star effect has something got to do with the lens we used? For example, you are using nikon that gives you 14 reflected stray lights, i think mine sony digital would only give me about 6 countable stray lights. I hope you understand what i mean. Please enlighten me on this.

Great picture - I'd love to know what you did to process the picture afterwards (in photoshop?). The smoothness of the water surface looks increadibly flat, how did you manage this?

Hi David,
this is a wonderful composition, perfect management of the light, superb colours and very sharp. The reflections are fantastic on the calm water and I like the way you have the bridge coming out of the top corner. Great capture.

Hi David,
I'm against putting yet another comment behind a picture that has already so much positive critiques! But I must admit that you pushed the limits so far beyond the usual night shot that I also want to congratulate you! Excellent work.

HI David,
I have been away from TE for a while, but today I just surfed on the site and saw your pic on the front page. Everything is just in place here. The light, the POV, the reflex and the warming sunset colors. I just loved the lamps effects on the sky and water.
GREAT!!!!!

Thanks for the comment, An abosolutely amazing shot, its hard to imagine it being that perfect in real life. The fact that the lights are so clear in the reflection and the way the bridge curves to give it more depth.

Hi David
Very nice image. Well composed using the rule of thirds. The bridge makes a great leading line. Also well exposed. Congratulations. By the way the star effect comes from the small aperture opening not the long exposure time. It also looks as if you struck gold in the foreground rock which also adds to the stron composition.

What a superb image, David - well worth all the time you spent to capture this. Fabulous colours and composition, and the 30 sec exposure is perfect. I guess it was a still night as the sharpness is excellent (the wind can spoil a 30 sec exposure, even on a tripod). Cheers . . . David

Amazing shot!! It is worth much more than the two points that I can give :) . I love the way the birdge wriggles in a snake like manner to ultimately dissolve into the water along with its shadow. The star shaped lights (which, as far I know, is an artifact of short aperture rather than long exposure) look beautiful and contrasty against the still waters and the bluish red sky.
