Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
My photograph was taken at Bolton Abbey, showing the ruins of the priory.
Bolton Abbey, takes its name from these ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian monastery known as Bolton Priory. The priory, closed in the 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by King Henry VIII.
(If you are unfamiliar with the reason for the dissolution of the monasteries, caused by the king; briefly, it was because he wanted to divorce his wife, which was forbidden by the pope. He severed contact with the pope and Rome, made himself head of the church and seized the lands and money owned by the Catholic monks. Catholicism was then banned!)
The priory stands on a 33,000 acres estate, much of which is open to the public and contains many sites of important, scientific interest.
The day that we were there was one of those days when the sky was mainly grey and cloudy but very occasionally the sun would cut through the clouds and create a quite eerie light.
I will add a workshop which shows the situation of the ruined priory on the banks of the River Wharfe.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
You show us two fine photos of the ruins of Bolton Abbey. In both of them the ruins are seen in the background, and the main photo is more about the well placed tree with an interesting complement. I wouldn't say that the WS is a photo of a red lifebuoy, but it catches a lot of attraction. Especially in the main photo I am very attracted by the special light and the very harmonious colours.
Best regards,
Gert

Good evening beverley,
The sky looks threatening, but I reckon the bright light upon the ruins at time taken both pictures.
You mentioned it was destroyed by the king orders - but did not mentioned the reason for the dissolution of the monasteries back than.
Anyway, nicely presented photos.
My best regards,
Ike

Hi Bev,
The tree in the foreground is helping to frame the abbey. The point of view is showing the details of the ruins of the Bolton Abbey. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrats to the colours of the picture. Have a nice day.

Hello Bev
Amazing what power can do. I am not catholic, but having faith pushed aside for selfish reasons is unimaginable. It is still happening today around the world. But I must keep mine at all cost. Nice images and background. Thanks for sharing some bit of useful history with us.

Hello Beverley, two very good shots, I like them both.
In the main post, even though the sky looks threatening, there is still some shadow beneath the tree. It is a rather lovely tree, with its leaves just breaking bud.
I sometimes wonder what would have happened to all the monasteries and priories if there had been no dissolution!!
Just think of all those magnificent churches etc.,?
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
When I saw the subject of the photo and read the title I immediately knew the destroyer of this beautiful abbey couldn't be anyone else but Henry VIII. You captured the abbey in a beautiful sunlight, which highlighted the warm tones so well. Great composition too with the tree included in the right hand side foreground.

Hello Bev,
I was so fascinated looking all your previous photos of this interesting ruin - Bolton Abbey.
This one is no exception. You've the beautiful light - clear and crisp. The tree adds some movement to the darkening clouds echoing the past and present to be united in one 'Harmony' - as it's shown in this picture.
I do like the WS - the whole scene is so harmonious with the flowing river with a scent of spring in the air. The gravestones adding a touch of spookiness in a good way - happy living soul.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful Abbey.

Bonjour, chθre Bev,
Trθs bonne journιe.

Beverley, it is a fascinating site to explore and it offers nice paths to walk along the river. The priory in ruin has kept its splendour. It is surrounded by a cemetery. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hi Beverley
A moody greyish dull day with the imposing ruins makes a strong subject - a neat factual image that draws the eye in and invites it to explore. Well done shot

an amazing building, even in ruins. some buildings didn't produce nice ruins, but the british monasteries are ever impressive.

Hello Beverley,
Thanks to the former king, England now has innumerable impressive ruins of abbeys and monasteries to visit :)
Henry VIII will most probably not have been aware of the current tourism possibilities that he has created. If these abbeys and monasteries were not closed at the time, they would probably now be privately owned and not open to visitors.
I am only trying to find something positive in the fateful history ...
I like your composition of the main upload with the tree on the right.
The sun illuminated the ruins beautifully under the overcast sky while the fence and the tree add more depth to the photo.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev,
nice angle on this beautiful ruins. I had the pleasure to visit it as well and I remember promising myself that I have to return there someday. It was a great place for walk with a child as well.
The tree in the foreground dwarfs the abbey, interesting effect. The light was fantastic.
Interesting note indeed, the ruins are so photogenic but as much as I don't care about the king's move to take money from the church, he could have prevent the destruction of those beauties to preserve them in a better shape for future generations.
Great reportage,
M

Hi Bev.
Great composition with this beautiful tree and the wonderful ruins, the other photo with the river is equally beautiful and gives us an ideal of the beautiful environment.
Every time I see some ruin of the marvelous abbeys, destroyed by that bloodthirsty and uneducated king, I get angry, thinking how one can be so insensitive to destroy so much beauty and all because of his insatiable carnal appetite ......
Sharpness, lighting, color, and the magnificent composition; they are all perfectly realized factors, in this precious image.
Well done. I like very much.
You have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.
