Photographer's Note

Hello Everyone,

I was so keen to photograph Durham Castle, after reading about it in a series of historical novels by Bernard Cornwell.

My idea was to capture it from the riverside, looking upwards but, unfortunately when we were there, after much rain, the hillside was considered unsafe and the riverside path was closed.

I had to think of new angles, to show its position within the city and liked this view, in interesting sunlight, where the castle appears like the top step, in a series of levels.

Construction of the Castle, began in 1072 under the orders of William the Conqueror, six years after the Norman conquest of England, and soon after the Normans first came to the North.

The holder of the office of the Bishop of Durham, Bishop William Walcher at the time, was appointed by the King to exercise royal authority on his behalf, with the castle being his seat.

It is for this reason that the bishops of Durham have always had special powers and were lords, as well as bishops. Their power was, it seemed at times, as great as that of the king.

The castle is in excellent repair because it remained the bishop's palace for the Bishop of Durham until Auckland Castle was made the bishops' residence in 1832; the current bishop still maintains offices at that castle, roughly ten miles to the south. Subsequently, Durham castle was donated to the University of Durham by Bishop William Van Mildert and would later become the college.

The castle provides dormitories for students at the university and it is for this reason that photography is not allowed inside the castle but is possible outside.

I will post some further photographs of the castle, showing how it is on the hill!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)
