Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
My photograph, today, shows a scene from the charming market town of Knaresborough.
Please open in large format for best view.
This is the River Nidd which flows through a deep gorge, with the town of Knaresborough built along the valley floor and up the steep sides.
The Victorian viaduct, straddles the river, whilst along the banks of the river are cafes and restaurants, and places to hire rowing boats.
The Victorian viaduct, which carries the Harrogate line over the water, has quite a history.
Just as the viaduct had been almost completed, it collapsed into the River Nidd on 11 March 1848. The resultant noise of the falling masonry was said to have lasted for five minutes. Whilst there was no official inquiry, it is believed that the collapse of the viaduct was down to a combination of bad workmanship, poor materials and excess water in the swollen river below as a result of heavy rain over a period of two months.
A new viaduct was started in 1848 with stone quarried from the same quarry that was used in the castle and other buildings in the town.
A replacement viaduct was opened on 1 October 1851 costing £9,803, and was constructed with castellated walls and piers to blend in with the ruined walls of Knaresborough Castle. It consists of four arches and three piers, the middle of which stands in the water.
Railway mapping records the viaduct as being 330 feet (100 m)long, 78 feet (24 m) high, and each span is 56.9 feet (17.3 m) across. The height of the parapets is only 35 inches (88 cm) which has led to Network Rail installing temporary fencing to protect workers when maintenance is underway on the structure. - Wikipedia
This view was taken from high up, on the castle walls.
I will add a further view as a workshop.
Have a lovely Sunday, Bev :-)

Two beautiful razor sharp pictures with beautiful natural colors, both taken from an attractive POV.

Well done

Hello Bev,
It is a great pleasure to watch this photo, not just because it's such a nice view generally, but the oldest photo I have posted on TE was taken from the hill behind where you were standing (you have seen it). My memories of Knaresborough are so tightly connected with that photo that I don't even remember walking here along the river. But I am sure I did, and I am sure everything looks nicer and brighter now than 56 years ago.
Kind regards,
Gert
PS Sorry, I forgot the WS. Yes, that's where I took my photo. ;-)

Hello Beverley, Knaresborough is a photogenic place, and with a blue sky for a background what could be better?
A classic view. The river bends slightly leading our eyes towards the viaduct.
The row of boats are like an invitation to take one out.
I always enjoy seeing views through arches as here, the arch creates a mini frame to a small picture of what lies beyond the bridge.
Excellent sharp quality.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Beverley,
A town that is not in the regular tourists route, peobably knon only to English people... first time I learn about this place.
marvelous by itself, the picture is amazing and intriguing.
The 78m railway viaduct is an eyes catching object, and yet - the river and both sides are wonderfully shown.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello bev,
Two lovely photographs from Knaresborough, each focusing on the splendid railway bridge across the Nidd but quite different in their nature because of differing heights of their viewpoints, your main image taken from just above the river which, together with the moored boats, leads the eye naturally through the arches of the bridge and onward to further buildings; while your workshop image, taken from much higher, gives an almost aerial view.
But both images are perfectly composed and taken with lovely soft light, rich colours, perfect exposure and excellent detail and sharpness.
A fascinating note too.
Lovely!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Beverley,
I remember these pictures from older uploads of you.
However, they remain very interesting photos of a particularly picturesque riverbank in Knaresborough.
This time you were lucky to include a few train wagons. Or perhaps you've been waiting a long time ... ?
I do not think waiting is annoying there. The place is very beautiful and you created a well balanced picture.
In the WS the flowers make a good framing at the bottom.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev,
Beautiful view of this old riverside town. Old buildings and the park on the other side make this place a delight. And the old bridge look great. I'm also glad you captured that colourful train although you were just a bit late of the perfect timing.

Hello Beverley,
Great view along the river, whose bend makes the composition more dynamic. The tall viaduct looks beautiful and your timing was excellent to captured the train as well. The right hand side with the town looks very attractive as well, also with thanks to the bright and clear sunlight.

Hello Bev,
I could see myself in the train about to arrive .... to this picturesque Yorkshire town. Once arrived, I'll settled down happily in one of the terraces ordering their Sunday roast with a glass of Yorkshire whisky as appetizer.... to watch the boats rowing by in this case 'still'.
After a hearty lunched , walked up to the viewpoints w/s to enjoy the scenic scenes to my heart's content.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful post.

I remember I saw a town with bridges while going up to edinburgh, but I don't remember its name, maybe it was this one. marvelous the shapes of the bridge and the inclusion of the row of boats in FG. can you imagine you inside the train during the first trips crossing the new bridge? would it colapse at this moment? I would think. haha.
take care

Hi Bev,
this is such a photogenic town and not too far from me.
I have posted some photos from there including one from almost same POV:
https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/United_Kingdom/England/North_Yorkshire/Knaresborough/photo1499216.htm
it is so bad that one cannot include links easily anymore.
The result is so different in your picture. You were blessed with better weather although it was windy and you didn't have the reflection but it feels so warm and colorful here.
Excellent composition,
M
