Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
Please open in the large format by right clicking on a New Tab. It really is worth the effort.
My photograph was taken inside the grounds of Framlingham Castle. It was a beautiful day and a special Children's Day had been arranged, where children could learn the sort of activities that were common for children, centuries ago.(I will show some photographs from that next.)
Before the activities began, the cafe was serving refreshments; top of the list was a cream tea. For those not familiar with this very English treat, it is a scone, accompanied with strawberry jam (usually) cream and a pot of tea.
The table where we seated ourselves had obviously been visited by someone who had partaken of such a treat and an uninvited guest was tucking in, enjoying the last of the jam!
Wasps are not people's favourite insect and have a bad reputation but, for several reasons, we should appreciate wasps.
Wasps, like bees, love nectar and by flying from one flower to another they transfer pollen and pollinate plants.
Wasps gather protein to feed to their larvae, hunting other insects and scavenging carrion.
Without them our gardens and our farms would be overrun with pest insects like aphids and caterpillars that damage the plants and, dead animals would linger longer on the ground.
They make amazing papier-mβchι nest structures and can be seen and heard munching on soft wood (like old garden fences) to turn into pulp for use in the construction of their nests. I have frequently seen them on wooden structures in my garden, happily scraping away at the wooden surfaces!
Some wasps store wild yeasts in their gut over winter. By feeding on grapes the following year, wasps kick start the fermentation process by passing on some of this yeast. A wine-lover’s best friend!
Wasps are not out to sting us!
If you flap at them, they will become agitated but if you leave them alone, they will not bother you!
I hope that I have convinced you about wasps.
I just enjoyed watching this little fellow munch away at the jam.
Have a good day, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
You're right to mention the importance of the wasp, yet together with flies they are the insects that bother us the most when we're in the garden.
A few years ago we had a whole nest in the balcony above our heads and had to take significant measures.
The beautiful photo with the wasp on the edge of the jar reminds me of the way Annelies fights the fruit flies inside the house.
Excellent presentation
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hello Bev,
It's such a simple photo, and not one I should have expected to see here, but it's delightfully bright and gave you an opportunity to write a very interesting and important note. As for the photo as such it's nicely colourful and well balanced, and the texture and patterns of the wood are very attractive.
Thank you also for showing such an interest in my photo today.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, I very much enjoyed reading all about the wasp.
By sheer coincidence I watched a short piece by Chris Packham only yesterday entitled "What are wasps for?" Your notes reiterate precisely what he said!
It is a simple shot,a perfect focus on how important wasps really are.
Excellent shallow depth of field.
Kind regards, Jean.

Fantastic focal upon the wasp, and the color of the jam looks refreshing, Beverkey, so no wonder everybody loves it.
Swift action superbly taken and nicely shown.

a curious image, I liked the softness of the red against the grey mood around and the diagonals of the timber in evidence.

Beverley, the wasp sting is painful that's why they aren t appreciated. However they are useful to our environment like all insects. This one was attracted by the strawberry jelly, the wasps like sweet food. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hello Beverley,
Any time you're outside with good weather enjoying a drink or a snack, these uninvited guests will show up.
The worst thing is when someone in the company starts trying to hit them and then they start flying around angry while I prefer to let them sit quietly. They don't attack if not hunted.
Beautifully taken with the body of the wasp bent over the jar edge.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Bev,
As soon as I saw this photo I thought that this might have been a homemade wasp trap - you know, an almost empty jam jar half-filled with water so the wasps climb in to eat the jam and then fall in and drown.
But then I realised that this was a tiny jar of the sort one gets in a cafι - and then, of course, I read your excellent note in full and discovered that you were, quite rightly, a lover of wasps and therefore no doubt left this one to continue its lunch while you had yours!
An excellent photograph with pin-sharp details of the wasp, very well captured!
Lovely!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Beverley,
I am glad to see this is not a recent photo, I was afraid that this year's first wasps had already arrived again! Surely the most annoying insects the way they tend to fly so closely and threateningly around one's head. A very good and sharp capture of this little fellow. Nice colour contrast of its yellow body and the red jam.

Dear Beverley,
Praising WASP nowadays is a bit slippery topic. None the less, if we prescind from American politics, its an interesting photo, portraying an everyday phenomenon, the wasps in a very tasty way.
Best Wishes,

Hi Bev
Looks like what we call a European wasp - nasty but fortunately they're mostly kept under control here.
A good sharp photo of this one chasing sweetness.
cheers

Hi Bev.
The explanation and details of the great utility of the wasps, has been splendid, I did not know most of their importance in the natural cycle, from now on I will not look at them as an enemy.
With which this original and curious photo, has a link of union with everything said, the jam jar that also seems homemade, stands out as in 3D, I also make my jams in season for the whole year.
Good sharpness and optimal lighting, gives great quality to the image.
Well done. I like very much
You have a good day.
Very best regards
Luis

hello Bev, Attractive composition of the common scene in summer. I was once stung in the face by a wasp when I didn't know they had their nest behind the water pipe. How I looked! Fortunately, I am not allergic. It can be fatal.
To me come other unwanted guests that I hate - the homeless snails. Wrrr. I give them some beer (they fall in the trap).
Best regards MAlgo
