“Brolly Street” – Caernarfon – Wales
In my previous post I showed how in Caernarfon some colour in the streetscape of the Bridge Street is applied by attractive faηades in different pastel shades.
But this is apparently not enough colour compensation against the backdrop of the grey Caernarfon Castle.
In Palace Street (Stryd y Plas) an art installation was installed consisting of multi-coloured umbrellas against the backdrop of the castle.
Perhaps it isn’t a very original idea because in almost every country in the world there are streets with an umbrella or parasol ceiling.
The Palace Street in Caernarfor can use such cheerful decoration well and give a grey rainy day the necessary color.
The umbrella’s were put up by a team at Hwb Caernarfon - the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) “umbrella” organisation, along with community volunteers.
They used 170 brollies suspended in rows above the town centre street.
The installation is part of a larger project to raise the profile of the Gwynedd town and improve its economy.
Project leader and BID manager Gavin Owen said: "We're working on improving Caernarfon as a whole and bringing more visitors and improve the economy.” ……."We came up with this idea months ago, and we came across a town centre innovation grant so we thought we'd put an application in, based on the idea with the brollies in the street.
"We were successful, we were provided with funding with the project."
There's over 170 umbrellas in different colours. Eight rainbow colours in total running all down the street.

Hi Rob,the alleys covered with colored umbrellas have become a very frequent fashion all over the world and we have seen several versions. What is surprising in your post is in the two photos of the WS, they all showed photos from below, but I don't remember seeing them from above. So .... congratulations for this post, even the historical scenery of this Welsh town completes the compositions. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Rob,
I like this!
I have seen umbrellas as decorative features in other European countries but not in the U.K. before!
All three photographs give a cheery impression of Caernarfon, despite the lack of sun.
I like this as a main post because it has more input from you, the photographer. The w/s are very well taken and give us more information about the location of this, your main post.
I see quite a few Welsh flags that have been furled, maybe so they don't interfere with the umbrellas.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour, cher Rob,
Amitiιs.

Hello Rob,
This is as bright and colourful as it could be, and the umbrellas are nicely arranged. But again I confess to preferring the WS, especially #2 showing the wide view from above. There we see the entire installation but also a large part of the town with its grey roofs and the grey sky. These contrasts are more stunning than in the main photo and also show the obvious need for umbrellas. Rain seems to have been imminent. And most important of all: the views from above are much more original than this view.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Rob,
The umbrellas are an eye-catcher. The point of view is showing the details of the colored umbrellas. The light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Goedemiddag Rob,
John.

Hello Rob, you give us a very comprehensive set of notes about the installation, thank you.
Of the three pictures, I like the most, the view of the street with the grey buildings that are enhanced by the introduction of the rainbow of colourful umbrellas.
Your main post is like the starter on a restaurant menu!
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hallo Rob, these multicolor umbrellas that cover a street become popular in many cities. They add vivid colors to the urban setting. They attract customers in the shops and modify the atmosphere. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hello Rob,
Three fabulous photographs of this installation of colourful brollies in Caernarfon, one from street level and two taken from above. And, naturally, being a sleuth, I just had to find a map and so I reckon you must have taken your two workshop photographs from either the castle's walls or from one of its towers.
Anyway, however you did it, this little trio of photographs were superbly captured with good composition, perfect exposure and colours and, as always, stunning sharpness and clarity.
Brilliant!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hallo Rob,

Vorig jaar ιιn in Madurai, India.
Vele groeten, Paul

Beautiful arrangement with 5 different umbrella-colors hang in perfect juxtaposition, Rob.
View upwards with the castle tower was marvelously collected.
The WS's sights from above are no-less attractive pictures.
Good afternoon,

Hi Rob,
we have seen this idea in so many sunny destinations and here in Wales the umbrellas make much more sense. Although I wonder whether they are attached strongly enough to withstand strong winds.
I like the strong color and the repeated rainbow pattern.
Great that we can see it also from above and in the wider context in your workshop photos.
Great reportage,
M
