Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
I hope you are all keeping well.
It does seem strange to have so much time to browse my archives but, it brings back many happy memories.
My photograph shows a view from the top of Honister Pass, in the Lake District, which I took on a TE Meeting.
Here, you can see the results of the work at the Honister Slate Mine, which is the last working slate mine in England. These are huge slabs of slate and it is here that quarrying for Westmorland green slate has been taken place since 1728.
Honister slate is a distinctive green slate, though Lakeland slate comes in a variety of shades and colours. It is a strong and durable material, excellent for roofs , and also for floors and walls.
Because of its location, it has always be difficult to distribute the slate. Before the opening of the Furness Railway in 1846, the slate was taken by packhorse over the western edge of Great Gable and Wasdale, for loading onto boats at Ravenglass.
The raised stones give you an idea of the size that can be obtained. At first, they they give the impression of an ancient stone circle, the type of which which can be found in Lake District.
Thanks for sharing my memories, which I hope you enjoyed Bev :-)

the rocks in the foreground, the colors of the mountains, and the shadows cast over the hills, Beverley, all made a beautiful outcome for this landscape picture.
Also, there is good sense of depth and scale.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hi Bev
as we can't go outside, it's time to look at our archives!
I went through that pass but didn't stay there. I remember we had to leave the small car of my daughter which could not go on on the very steep slope! I missed a good landscape, I should return there when it will be possible to take a plane and drive a car to discover the scene.
Stay home, don't panic!
My new hobby is cooking, looking for simple recipes to change what I have done now for 3 years. Thank you Covid 19!
Cheers

Hello Bev,
The large slabs are quite beautiful with their slightly different tones and shapes. If it wasn't for the strong message on the slab to the right, this could have been a pre-historic temple , or maybe a medieval cemetery. The immediate background is not so pretty, but that is well compensated for by the beautiful distant background with its sloping hills and shaded areas.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
A fantastic view of the old mine with the vertical slabs of slate in the foreground. The mountain landscape in the background is also wonderful and you captured it in such an appealing sunlight. Great work.

Hello Bev,
The landscape here is very impressive and quite wild for England. The stones form a curious element. The combination works well,

these stones looks like an ancient tomb, a menir.
the aspect of the stones looks the ones we have here and are named "iron stones" because they are very hard.
take care

Beverley, fasinating site where the slate is extracted from the mountain for centuries. This building material can be used to cover to the roofs but for other works too. The pass offers a stunning view of the surroundings to the visitors. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hello Bev,
Yes, time to browse old archives and lots of time to do anything apart from wander outdoors or visit friends and neighbours. Maybe time for reflection too. So here I am, like the Prodigal Son, returning to the fold of TE after a few months.
I see that TE remains blessed with its usual difficulties and now it appears that the "beta" site has disappeared too. Oh well.
But, yes, your photograph brings back fond memories of that weekend - almost four years ago (!!!) - when we met up with Viviane and Chris and others in Cumbria. A lovely shot in which those great jaggy pieces of slate make an impressive foreground against the distant hills and the sky with its fluffy clouds.
Lovely!
You stay safe.
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Bev
The slate stones almost look like ancient standing stones although the illusion is cancelled by the mine rubble. A spectacular scene.

Hello Bev, What memories. These were the days. I was there too during the TE meeting! Difficult to believe that it was nine years ago. The other people left the site, only John has appeared today.
Interesting view of these stones.
Keep away from the virus

The varying colours in the slate are amazing, when you would think of slate as being grey. If it wasn't for the sign on the right Strictly.........I would've thought of a ring of ancient Cumbrian stones.
Enjoy looking back through your archives.

Hello Beverley, an excellent composition from Honister Pass.
Carefully considered, I love the way that we have the standing slabs of slate in the foreground backed by the fells in the distance, and all in sharp focus.
The subtle colours of the slate are easily seen.
And as is evident by the spoil heaps, there is so much waste when processing the slate.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Bev.
Great landscape, very beautiful with those mountains of soft heights, which definitely attracts attention, are those big dolmens that seem to look towards the soft mountains in the background.
The color and light management are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the image.
Very well done. I like it
Have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi Bev,
I remember us standing there. I already forgot the name though, so when I first noticed the title I couldn't remember where I have heard it... Of course the picture illustrated it perfectly so I didn't have the problem of remembering the place after seeing the view.
Very interesting foreground with the variety of rocks and amazing panoramic view behind.
You captured a moment with good light there, I remember the clouds were passing quickly there and some of my photos had too much shade for my taste but this is brilliant.
I suppose I can revisit as soon as we are free to move around again...

Hello Beverley,
Indeed, the huge slabs of slate gave me the impression of an ancient stone circle.
But then placed on a higher altitude, which usually is not the case, I think.
Your picture shows us well the beautiful landscape.
Pretty rough but I think that's beautiful.
Excellent composition and depth.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Beverley,
I like quiet places for hiking in the mountains and you shown us a wonderful panorama of the mountain landscape. Great compo with big rocks in fg and mountains in bg. The layers of the clouds on the blue sky nicely wrapped this photo.
Perfect presentation with superb quality.
Best regards,
Zbigniew
