Photographer's Note
Vancouver
Today I dedicate the series to our man in Vancouver: Craig (Macjake).
He undoubtedly knows the history of his city, but he probably did not see in real the statue of the name-giver of his city George Vancouver.
George Vancouver was born in King's Lynn, Norfolk in 1757.
His ancestors came from the Dutch town of Coevorden (Koever in the Drenthe dialect). The surname Van Coever was changed to Vancouver in England.
After two journeys under the famous captain James Cook, George was promoted to captain with the assignment to map the west coast of North America. During this trip he discovered that Vancouver Island is an island, and gave it his name.
His statue has been given a beautiful place in front of the King's Lynn Custom House, one of the towns iconic landmarks. It was designed by architect Henry Bell and built by Sir John Turner in 1683.
Bell was influenced in his design by the architecture of the capital and Holland and was designed the first classical building in King’s Lynn. It is seen as the most perfect classical buildings in provincial England.

Hello Rob,
Dare I call these photos unusually conventional for coming from you? Maybe even like postcards? But don't worry, they are all very carefully taken and make delightful views. The statue and the Customs House are both very attractive and the green against yellow is a very good combination. Furthermore these photos teach me about the origins of Vancouver and the person who discovered it.
Best regards,
Gert

Bonjour Rob,
C'est vrai que Craig est un digne reprιsentant de la ville de Vancouver. Pour moi c'est ΰ l'autre bout du pays mais il est comme mon cousin. Trθs belle composition.

Hello Rob
I learned a little bit myself. Maybe the town of Vancouver in the state of Washington is of the same. Nice set of images. Well presented and written. I know Mac will like it.

Hello Rob!
Are you sure you did not mix up parts of your Dutch and English archives?
This looks perfectly Dutch to my humble eyes...

Hi Rob,
The red-orange buoy is an eye-catcher. The point of view is showing the details of the statue of Goerge Vancouver and of the the Customs House. The light is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Rob,
You have done some interesting research to link together the Netherlands, England and Canada! It is so interesting and adds historical understanding to your photograph.
There have been some very interesting tv programmes about this area, with a focus on King'g Lynn, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I like how you have connected George Vancouver to the custom house by way of the chain. It's a fine capture of the statue and stands out remarkably well because of your thoughtful composition.
The Customs House is a very fine, compact building. It is perfectly designed for its purpose, captured with excellent clarity in your w/s.
I see where your last photographs originated!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Rob, three delightful shots taken with your expert eye for composition.
All three in perfect focus.
The strong chain is beautiful, but what is the explanation for it being there?
The Customs House is very special.
Excellent notes, a good read, thank you for the information.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob, We always learn something on TE. I had no idea how Vancouver city got its name. Interesting monument of the old sailor. Excellent composition. Nice colours - the green monument and even the red element is eyecatching. Are the chains the ones from your previous picture?
Kind regards Malgo

Hello Rob,
Besides the interesting place, this picture is a complementary to the preceding post with the chains. Now I comprehend the overall sight.

Hallo Rob, this statue was built in tribute to this famous captain. He discovered Vancouver island and many other places on the Pacific coast of Canada and Usa. The pov lines it up well with the custom house in the bg. Fine colors, good sharpness, educational photo note, regards.

Hello Rob,
I knew nothing about the history of George Vancouver, so thanks for the information! I can see that Dutch roots touched Canada as well as the United States. :-) It's a lovely statue, and I like the photo in the WS showing all of the charming Customs House, too.
