St Michael de Rupe
The Church of St. Michael de Rupe (St. Michael of the Rock), Brentor, is perhaps the most striking English example of a church on a height. Today, the church receives several thousand visitors each year. There is a magnificent view from the churchyard in clear weather, with bleak Dartmoor to the east, Plymouth Sound and Whitsand Bay to the south, the Tamar Valley and Bodmin Moor to the west, and the heights of Exmoor just visible in clear weather to the north. Even when the thick moorland fogs descend, this is an eerily beautiful place, as the wind whips shreds of cloud past the hill. The church stands 1,110 feet above sea level on an ancient, extinct, volcanic cone. It is an ancient site – the current church is surrounded by an Iron Age earth-walled hill-fort (150BC – 50AD). The dedication to St. Michael is common for churches in high places – there are nearly 800 in England alone, perhaps the most famous being the abbey fortress of Saint Michael’s Mount on the Cornish coast, and St. Michael’s on the Mount at Glastonbury, Somerset.

Hello Leslie,
There are places that receive several thousand visitors each day. I am glad this is not (yet) one of them. No people are needed in a photo like this, The warm evening light and the details of the church and its surroundings are enough to make me interested. All important features are very nicely seen against the beautiful sky, including the large bird.
Kind regards,
Gert

HI Leslie,
A beautifully captured shot, taken from a great POV to make the most of the evening sunlight. Lovely light and shade showing great detail in the church. Lone bench to rest and take in the surrounding landscape.
One bird of prey on the wind. Interesting door in the wall beneath the church presumably to the crypt makes me wonder what lies behind.

Hi Les
love this! A really beautiful study in tranquillity and so typical of an iconic English Summer evening captured in the glow of the fading light. Simple and compelling work.

Hello Leslie ;
A closer view of the Church we could discover in a previous wider composition . The last sunbeams on this old building : the effect is just glorious .

Hello Les,
It is very attractive this hilltop church and looks quite beautiful under the soft evening light. I like the contrasting framing offered by bench and trees. Lovely warm colours and excellent clarity. Love the detail in the walls.

Hello Leslie,
This is a great shot of this old church. The inclusion of the bird in flight adds a nice point of interest for the scene. The low angle lighting works great providing a spotlight effect on the building and foreground grasses. The upward view shows the height of the building emphasizing it's importance in the scene.
TFS,
Asa

Sharpness and clarity make this picture attractive.
Very well done, TFS.

Leslie, you found a wonderful vantage point for this photo, showing the entire church, balanced by the tree and bench on opposite sides. The POV from below the peak gives us a great sense of the church being on a hill. And the light is fantastic, shining on everything including the bird. Thanks.

Hello Les,
What a fascinating and informative note you have written! And, ever the sleuth, I had to do a bit of digging myself and found this website and read about how St. Michael threw the Devil down off the tor and subsequently lobbed a huge boulder at him, deterring him from ever returning again. Good lad. Have you seen the big boulder which apparently lies somewhere around here? There's a picture of it linked to that webpage.
This picture is one of many these days which seems to have had its quality and sharpness quite severely degraded by the "shrinking" to 790 pixels wide which seems now to be the norm on TE. But, when viewed at its native size of 1400 pixels in width, this photograph is stunning, not least because of the glorious low-angled sunlight which bathes not only the church but also the rough grassland beside and beneath it.
The light and colours are delightful, your composition excellent, your exposure bang-on and the details and sharpness exquisite.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Leslie
Cool sense of drama in this scene, the bird creates a nice element to the scene, and how the old church is lit is perfect. I guess from the linear design of the church and the windows that this building is considerably old. Really nice colors and an excellent subject, great to place the tower on thirds like this.
Thanks as always

Hola Les
Such a beautiful composition where I like the soft colors of late evening and the way you composed the capture just with the blue sky and the silhouettes, bench inclusive, at the back
Well done, regards

Howdy Leslie,
Attractive late daylight scene in warm lighting with shadows of the gothic St. Michael de Rupe. The design looks more fortress like than church, but then many were refuges during the medieval age.
Obviously well constructed to still be standing after the centuries, and an ideal spot.
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers,
Ray

Hi Les
A wonderfully haunting and somewhat eerie, based on your description we can simply appreciate the church's splendid location with its commanding view over the valley and open land bellow. This image speaks to the photographer seeing the potential, its a great comp in my eyes i think without the trees its just a tourist snap..... with the trees a well thought out composition, stunning tones and green fg draws the eyes in. Great to view that our feathered friend is glad to be included & thumb up to your quality exposure control, its another amazing scene and historic sight delicately shot, Congrats.
Have a great day
Best regards
