Photographer's Note
I recently showed a misty picture from Wells-next-the Sea in Norfolk. Later the sun shone and we drove along some narrow country lanes near Burnham Market and came across the most beautiful fields of poppies. I have seen many beautiful pictures of poppy fields on TE so it was a challenge try and get something interesting. It was much more difficult than I thought and most images did not seem to show the true magnificence of the landscape. I had taken a few by panning my camera and the one shown is an example.

Hi Ann,
I am not sure how this will be received by the rest of TE community, for me it's very Monet like with blurred strong colours. It kind of work for me, i guess that's what i like about this form of art.

Hello Ann,
An image that certainly catches the eye with its bright red and green tones. The panning results in an impressionist effect verging on the abstract. Innovative photography.

Hello Ann,
Just like fields of colza, poppies appear on this website in a seasonal cycle, yet, I have never been at the right place at the right time to catch some of my own... :-p))
I will probably be not the only one to see an impressionist painting in your abstract image, made out of complementary colours. The vertical panning is properly balance between achieving an artistic effect, while remaining a recognizable subject.

Hello Ann,
the image looks like an impressionist painting!
And it creates so nicely dreamy atmosphere of the scene.
For me also the color scheme couldn΄t be more captivating-green and red(fabulous combination-isn΄t it?)
Beautiful and creative composition with strong graphics!
Really well done Ann!
Wish You a nice day

Hi Ann
Great idea very well executed. I know it is not easy to use this technique and come up with a great image like this one.
Impressionism at its best!

Hello Ann,
What a beautiful and striking photograph! Almost like an Impressionist painting, we can appreciate the full splendour and beauty of these bright poppies even although we cannot see each bloom individually or in sharp focus.
The light is lovely, the colours vibrant yet true, your excposure perfect and the composition very pleasing to the eye.
I really must try to get away from my obsession with sharpness and clarity and try something like this though I can imagine that it is very much more difficult than one would at first imagine - getting the shutter speed and the speed of "vertical panning" just right would not be easy by any means.
A very original and very beautiful photograph!
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.
P.S. Just a couple of wee questions for my own education - was this a case of just panning either upwards or downwards? Did you focus sharply on the poppies or were they not in focus when you took it? I rather suspect that they were in focus - just about everything would be at f/32!

Hi Ann,
This is a beautiful abstract, the fuzziness t the image reminds me of a beautiful painting, and the color combination is superb. Love this effect.

Ciao Ann
Ciao e buona giornata
Romano

Hello Ann - A beautiful shot and as previously noted, the result of you ILM evokes an Impressionist painting. Did you see this one in a similar vein http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/photo1434857.htm which was posted yesterday? Quite different in subject and colours but also a shot evidencing the beauty of the technique. Something I have wanted to try out but haven't found the right subject yet. I would have been thrilled to capture this, beautiful contrasting colours and enough visual information to make the subject decipherable. An creative and very attractive post. Super! Warm regards rosemary

Hi Ann,
This one is a success! It's not easy to say why but I'll try anyway. First, the subject is still recognizable. Texture is something like from an impressionistic painting. And there is still some order, colours changing from green to red from front to back.

Hello Ann,
Well, this one definitely worked.
The result has similarities to a Monet painting.
It is both restful and intriguing.
I could definitely live with this on my living room wall.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi dear Ann
Very very fantatsic image. Blurred effcet is caused by the wind otherwise slow shutter setting? Anyway full of dremas and fantagys at all! Proportion and balance is also very very significant.
All the best and have a good day! TAKERO

hi ann,
i love the impressionistic shot. the colours merge wonderfully well. it reminds me of the old cadbury's flake advert with the girl painting a watercolour in a poppy field and then the rain came on.

Hello Ann,
a very beautiful image with delightfully bright, natural colours. I love the simplicity and effectiveness of the composition as it allows us to perceive the vibrance of the scenery in a wonderful way. We can feel the subtlety and fragility of the poppies and, if we get from the panning effect the sense of brisk movement, then some intriguing drama is added too. Great work, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hi Ann
Obviously your experiment was a success. As others have said it certainly gives an impressionist effect and I also like it, well done on this catchy original work. Its spring time here now, so guess what I'll be trying next weekend.

Hi dear Ann
I've been AWOL in Europe for the past month or so and have missed my TE addiction. What a great photo. It's unique aswell as beautiful and uses a technique that I'd love to do more of - especially having seen the success of your photos here. It reminds me of a watercolour. Excellent work, and artistic stuff, congrats.
Warmest wishes

Hi Ann,
this kind of image seem to be going around, as I have seen in other site as well. It is not my thing, It always makes me feeling like I need to put on glasses to look at it. But the colors is gorgeous here and it looks like an impressionist style painting.

Hi Ann,
I like the effect that you have created here. Indeed it is difficult to get something different of these poppy fields, but you have succeeded with this almost abstract painting like image. Bright contrasting colours makes it an eye catching creation.

Hi Ann,
A nice abstract shot successfully utilising motion blur during the exposure by panning. Good tight framing and a subtle warm cold color contrast between the red tulips and their cyan hued yellow green stems. The diagonal band of red leading to the back adds dynamism. Tfs!
