Photographer's Note
Passing time in packed spaces.
Look here look there, look everywhere..
Think this and think that, dream and drift away...
The London Underground two days before Christmas.
Where are you going? What is your purpose? To see friends or buy a few presents for the family?
Imagine if you could read minds!

Hi Casper,
I was about to write down my words under this one, but today i found that it had disapperaed! Finally you show it again, thanks :)
While travelleing in public transports, i also watch people's faces: people packed up like dead souls (homage to gogol), each one with different stories of a small piece of life: when watching them as a big picture from outer space, as a "bunch", those lives look so unimportant and miserable in the endlessness of our universe, this one or that, doesn't matter; but when watching them from ground level, as being one of them, i feel the power of so many stories coming together, dramas, tragedies, vudevilles or humoresques. Life is never equal to us, but that moment, in that train or bus, we come together to equalize, at least for ten minutes or maybe half an hour of trip. Then the synergy disappers, and forms again, when the new group of passangers gather again and again and again...
All at all, we are all passengers on this huge (or tiny) turning ball called "the world", we get in and out for a travelling time called "life". I could start writing down a novel about it, but i am too much a tiny element on earth to do this. Your photo makes it shortcut. This is the beauty of photography...
All the best,
Deniz

Hello Casper,
This is a very fine shot. It's timeless, especially being B&W -- could have been taken when I used to commute on the tube several decades ago! I really like your note, which brought back memories too of how the crowded conditions would stimulate such wonderings.
I wish you all the best in 2010.

Hello casper. Classic black and white. Photographically perfectly realized. This is one of the most interesting pictures I've seen lately on TE. Compliment. Regards, Wolfgang.

Hello Casper,
This is a very universal, but not common, photography.
It cld have been done everywhere, in Paris, Warsaw, Rome or Moscow. People look the same, the same faces and behaviours. We are both so different and so similar. That`s the way I feel looking at yr photo, that is technically perfect of course.
best regards
Joanna

Hi Casper,
As already said it is a common but interesting pic as per the faces and people attitudes. You captured a lot of different details in one single shot!
I also like the shiny look of the pic though it is in B&W and has grain in it. What kind of post-processing have you used?
Best wishes,
Pris.

Casper,
Good to see you posting again after awhile. I actually really like this shot. it depict exactly what I have seen when I was in London last time. While we are in a very confine space with so many people, not an inch away from each other, yet, everyone is so distance, in their own world and the faces are just very tire. I have never feel so lonely with so many people around me. Black and white is perfect for this shot. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Hi Casper
Like your B&W subway shots. Great clarity. Good lighting management. I like the candidness of it.

Hi Casper,
Very bold and excellent capture. I have been tempted to shoot when on the peak hour trains here in Brisbane but am not game, maybe I need to be subtle. I am curious of you technique on how to shoot like this.
I love the moement and the expressions. The B&W is just great as well.

Hello!
Great daily life shot. You captured very well that mood; a lot of stories in those minds and eyes.
Greetings,

Hello Casper,
I noticed this shot, as it was refered to on the forum item about photography in public places.
My experience is that much is down to quality (is the picture worth it?) - and then this is a full yes!
On the other hand, I'd probably find it annoying if all sorts of iffy photographers starting taking pictures every time I rode a bus. So my argument's got nothing to do whatsoever with security issues.
Anyway, on photography OF PEOPLE in public spaces, the jury is still out, but not on this shot. Call me elitist, but for a GOOD picture, I'd allow for much more than this. Problem is you can't judge a picture by the photographer, can you?
Cheers.
Benny
PS: Great title find!

Good street photography is scarce in these pages, but this photo definitely belongs to that category. Black is as black as it must be.
It has many messages.

Hi Casper
When I've just a look at your 'last page' of photos, I've realized that this style brings back something or maybe better somebody to me. Never mind ...
I've selected this one to make my critique/comment and when I did it, I was speechless for some time because of the quality of the photo.
I assume that 'this underground place' was in motion, so obtaining such photo quality (ISO 800, 1/60s) is
quite surprising for me. Hmm, Probably I will have to buy a new camera. A Canon for sure ... :-)
But there is another issue that made me speechless.
The subject of the photo. The 1/60th of a second of something fleeting, something puzzling, something that will never happen again or what happens constantly in such places. Amazing !
That's a very good job Casper

Mirek

Hi Casper
Apparently, you're a humanist photograph. This picture, everybody has seen it at least once in his life in a bus, train or metro, but taking it is another thing! I like the different attitudes, everyone in his own world, not exchanging a word with the neighbour.
A superb B&W daily life atmosphere.
spend a good sunday
