Photographer's Note

Mingulay is located 12 miles south of the Isle of Barra and is the second to last island in the Outer Hebrides chain which runs from Lewis in the north to Berneray in the south.

The island was once populated and remains of the village are still present on the island. However, at the start of the twentieth century people began to travel to the mainland for work and the islanders began to realise how much easier life was away from the island. In addition to this, the value of the crofting they undertook to pay their rent dropped and soon life on the island became near impossible. In 1912 the last remaining islanders left for good.

Today the island is owned by the National Trust of Scotland. It is possible to join an organised trip for Castlebay in Barra. The island is exceptionally beautiful and full of interesting wildlife. The cliffs on the islands west coast are extraordinary and the second highest in the British Isles after the island of Hirta in the St. Kilda archipelago. Walking round the remains of the village is a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of a life that once was and will almost certainly never be again.

The island has much in common with the St. Kilda archipelago but has received far less publicity. I strongly recommend a visit to anyone with a love for island hopping.

This photo was taken on approach to the island. We approached the island from the north and in this photo you can easily see the three hills of the island. More photos to follow soon!
