Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
When I posted my last photograph, from Framingham Castle, I promised that I would show you some photographs of the Children's Activity Day, where the children were assisted is learning play activities that were followed by children in previous generations.
My main photograph shows a proud mum photographing her child learning to walk on stilts.
Stilt walking is an ancient tradition and was practised in ancient Greece as far back as the 6th century BC. Some other stilt-use traditions are very old. In Belgium, stilt walkers of Namur have practiced fights on stilts since 1411.
The inhabitants of marshy or flooded areas sometimes use stilts for practical purposes, such as working in swamps or rivers.
The shepherds of the Landes region of southern France used to watch their flocks while standing on stilts to extend their field of vision, while townspeople often used them to travel the soggy ground in their everyday activities.
Nowadays, stilt walking can often been seen at festivals, where the stilt walkers wear long trousers to cover the stilts and give the impression that they are extremely tall.
The children were eager to learn the skill of stilt walking and, if they fell off, the soft grass protected them from injury. It was surprising just how quickly some individuals succeeded; they probably had a good sense of balance!
I will reveal some other activities in workshops.
Thanks for your interest.
I hope you enjoyed it, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley, a good shot from the children’s day.
The people create a short diagonal line as they stand on the lawn, which after studying their activity, leads the eyes towards the background and the building behind;I assume that that is Framingham Castle?
I like the strong shadows of the people on the grass, we see that there is obviously another child at the side of the mother, although almost out of sight apart from her elbow and foot.
I remember attempting to use stilts like this when a child, not easy!
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello,
I haven't seen any kids walking on stilts since my own childhood (a long time ago), so I thought that was a game that was totally out of fashion. But obviously it is well suited for photos, especially in this kind of weather and with the child and a parent placed on a diagonal on a very green lawn. The diabolo shown in the WS is probably even rarer, at least in my country. I had to look at YouTube to see what actually goes on. Those who are clever at it can do fantastic tricks, but equivalent to tennis? I can't imagine a "Wimbledon of diabolo". As a sport it seems more similar to gymnastics or figure skating.
Three very entertaining photos. Take another 100 and put them together inside one frame and you would have like a Bruegel painting of children's games.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
Grandfather and grandmother always be proud to "help" their grandchildern doing some strange activity, and of course documenting.
But, I look around and enjoy the beautiful, building on the background. It was built from local stones, and with style, very different from what found here in Israel.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Beverley,
I had no idea that stilt walking was such an ancient tradition, I was always very bad at it as a child (and probably still am, but I haven't tried it for years)! Excellent photo of this family with the girl standing proudly on those stilts. It was such a beautiful day with wonderful colours. The wonderful stone house makes a great backdrop as well.

Dear Beverley,
Its a nice reportage showing us children practicing different ancient games. How lucky they are that they are separated from the tablets and smartphones! The game called diablo was new to me!
Best Wishes,
Gy.
PS: Thank you for your kind words under my latest photo.

Hello Bev,
An excellent note which is both informative and very interesting too - and a lovely little trio of photographs to accompany it.
I think your choice of main photograph was perfect with the young girl practising balancing on stilts with instructor while mum looks on and captures the moment on her phone. At least this mum is taking more interest than the ones in your workshop picture who are sitting glumly looking on.
I like the boy with the Diabolo too - but I think he's puzzling over it just a bit and not quite sure what he's supposed to do with it.
Three brilliant shots all of excellent quality too!
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Well seen and taken this view, nice sunlight well captured, good effect with shadows, nice architecture in the Bg, for the girl, balance seems precarious !

Hi Bev
A good trio of photos of kids getting into different activities. The girl in the main one does look very awkward though.

Bonjour, chθre Bev,
Je croyais que les ιchassiers ιtaient landais ! comme quoi, l'utilisation d'ιchasses est rιpartie partout. ! ;o)
Une jolie composition mettant en scθne l'architecture et la joie du dιconfinement (ou s'y relatant).

Hi Bev
Brilliant sunshine! It's fun for the children to play outside and discover some new attraction/sports under the supervision of the parents or grand parents. She still needs some help to stand up but she will get a superb picture she will show to her children "I remember trying to walk on stilts...."
I published years ago a race with stilts https://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=8&p=1339165
Rainy day, cold temperature, I stay home!
Cheers

Beverley, the castle forms a splendid background. The girl is learning how to walk on stilts in the garden. I see other children seated on the wooden bench. That skill can be useful to participate to the carnival. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hello Beverley,
Good sharpness and well composed using the rule of thirds. Excellent warm cold color contrasts between the red roofs and blue sky. The stilt-walker provides a strong focal point. Tfs!
