Photographer's Note

A picture similar to this one was a reason I made one of the biggest mistakes in my life. We have visited Tierra del Fuego a couple of years ago. One of the major attractions there, especially for people from northern hemisphere, was a possibility to see penguins in their natural habitat. I knew about it and such trip was on top of my list. There were several trips which all promised to witness wonderful wildlife. We picked the best one, I believe; in the booklet it showed a picture similar to this one. You could see there tiny birds with black and white color, I guessed they must be penguins. Sadly they were just cormorants but that species was from a distance looking like penguins. Same here, for someone without knowledge –these birds could pretend to be penguins. Sadly I did not have enough time to take another boat tour to the penguin colony, so I may have missed the opportunity of lifetime.

Of course there are no penguins in the northern hemisphere and the birds which you see in this photo were guillemots (Uria aalge) photographed on one of the Farne Islands (more precisely it was Staple Island). Same trip on which I have photographed puffins. Guillemots don’t have orange beaks but they are still a lovely species to see.
