Photographer's Note

I shot this image of Canary Wharf back in the summer and have thought nothing of it until recently. Of late I’ve been itching to capture rainbows but unfortunately the weather hasn’t obliged. It got me thinking about the last time I photographed a rainbow and I thought of this one. I was shooting on the bank of the River Thames at Rotherhithe at low tide. My main focus was to photograph west towards Tower Bridge and the City, I was lucky to capture a stunning sunset scene. Stormy showers had been passing over me regularly, soaking me to the bone. I had no rain cover for the camera so sacrificed keeping myself dry by sheltering the camera with my rain coat. I would do it every time, although I now always keep a camera rain cover and umbrella in my bag! I was pretty convinced at some point in the shoot I would get a rainbow, so I was constantly looking over my shoulder. One finally arrived and I plucked the tripod out of the mud and scuttled to a different section of the beach to take in Canary Wharf and the rainbow. I think perhaps I didn’t process this one in the summer as I remember not being enamoured with the composition. I’m extremely pleased I revisited it last night as the light and colours are magical and after all the composition isn’t too bad either. I quite like how the rainbow lifts out of shot and how the towers of Canary Wharf balance the scene on the other side of the image. I don’t think this photograph would have worked if the towers hadn’t been lit up by the late afternoon sun.
