Photographer's Note
This week we visited Bideford where this shot was taken early in the evening,no tripod was available so a handy lamp post was utilised.
Long Bridge is a Grade I listed ancient monument spanning the River Torridge, connecting the east and west parts of Bideford. It was constructed originally from timber around 1286, and required regular reconstruction. Between 1460 and 1500 a masonry bridge was built around the wooden one, which allowed the old structure to act as scaffolding for the new work while remaining open to traffic.
Long Bridge has 24 pointed arches, varying in span from 3.7m to 7.6m. The differing spans reflect the different lengths of timber used for arch lintels in the underlying original structure. The bridge piers vary from 2.7m to 3.7m in thickness.

Hello Leslie
Despite the lack of a tripod you achieved a very nice evening shot with a longer than usual exposure time. The way the colors change from the warm of the artificial light on the bridge to the colder blues of the water and sky is very attractive.
have a great weekend

Hello Les,
Great shot with or without a tripod! The floodlit bridge sweeping in from the right makes a beautiful contrast with the lovely blue sky and glassy waters of the river. Lovely!

Hello Les,
You've written a fascinating note about this bridge which, amazingly, dates from the 13th century. I presume that nowadays it is only crossed by pedestrians though I did find this photo on Wikipedia of a locomotive crossing it at one time.
Anyway, this is a beautiful "blue hour" shot from early evening in which the mixture of natural and artificial lights is truly delightful. Your longish exposure of one second has smoothed the water nicely though not too much. I like too your strong composition with the bridge itself forming a strong diagonal across the frame and leading us to the buildings and lights of the distant part of the township.
It sounds to me that, as in my case, your tripod spends most of its time in the boot of your car, but the handy lamppost has come to the rescue here and helped you produce a lovely image with gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and excellent details and sharpness.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Les,
This ancient bridge is not just quite beautiful, I am also impressed to see such a long bridge from hundreds of years ago. It's a remarkable work of medieval engineering. It is very nicely illuminated and the yellow reflections, along with the pink ones from other sources, have created a very pleasant atmosphere of early evening. The sharpness shows that there is no need to carry a tripod around, at least not as long as there is a lamp post available.
Kind regards,
Gert

Bonjour Leslie
Bon samedi
