Photographer's Note

On 26th of April 1986 a explosion occured in one of the reactors of the Chornobyl nuclear powerplant. A big cloud of radiation escaped from the powerplant and contaminated a gigantic area.

Prypiat is situated near the Chornobyl Powerplant and is now an abandoned city. The people of Prypiat were evacuated 24 hours after the explosion and were told to leave their belongings because they would be back in a few days. Due to this evacuation, and the fact that nobody returned, it is still possible to see personal belongings which were left behind 22 years ago.

The Photo:

The military supervisor (there is always a guy from the army going with you on tours) took us to a day care centre. The tourguide told us it was pretty unique to go there, because he did Prypiat tours for a few years now and never went to that place.

The day care centre was first inspected by the military man and he told us it was okay to wander around. In one of the locker rooms I saw these children shoes standing on top of the lockers. The tourguide told us that they were probably standing there for 22 years now, as this place is normally not visited by tourists.
