Photographer's Note
This photo was taken while going down on the gondola from First to Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland in beautiful Switzerland. I was looking down through the open window of the gondola to take this photo. This area just looks like a fairytale with many green mountain valleys and the beautiful Swiss chalet style home.
About this photo: On that day it was our last free day of our "Bernese Oberland Regional Pass" and we decided to go up to First to walk to the Bachalpsee from where I took one of my previous photos from this area. The weather wasn't clear, but it was fairly nice. On the way back down with the gondola I noticed these beautiful grassy hills dotted with typical Swiss houses. Note the waterfalls coming down from all the way up top. I liked the view here and the sunlight.

I added some contrast and saturation in photoshop to bring out the colours a bit more. I hope you like it! We sure loved Switzerland...what a great place!

Some information on the Bernese Oberland: We spend about 10 days in the Interlaken region in July 2008. We stayed in Ruchenbuhl which the Thunersee about 4km (2.5mi) from Interlaken. This was our base for exploring the surrounding area known as the Bernese Oberland or Jungfrau Region. The Bernese Oberland is part of the canton of Bern which is located in the centre of Switzerland. You will be able enjoy the following: snow-covered mountain tops, fresh green meadows, forests, blue lakes, beautiful villages and gondolas that take you to amazing view points.
The Jungfrau region is also the most popular tourist area in Switzerland as you can find some of the most famous mountains here: The Eiger (3,970m/13,025ft) with its almost completely vertical north face which attracts many climbers. Besides the Eiger you will also have beautiful views of the Monch (4,107m/13,474ft) and of course the most famous one the Jungfrau (4,158m/13,642ft). The Jungfrau is known for the train trip to Jungfraujoch which is also called the Top of Europe. Here you will find the highest train station in Europe at an elevations of 3454m. From the Top of Europe you can enjoy beautiful views of the whole snowy area and the well known Aletsch Glacier. These mountains, as well as the area behind them in the canton of Wallis, are considered as a natural inheritance by UNESCO and therefore it’s a protected area. Another famous viewpoint is the Schilthorn, with its rotating restaurant call Piz Gloria it was also the set for the James Bond movie called "On her majesty’s secret service".
The gateway to the Jungfrau area is the city of Interlaken which is located between two lake: the Thunersee and the Brienzersee. The Thunersee is loved by sailers and windsurfers, especially some places at the southern side of this lake can be a good starting point for day trips in the Bernese Oberland and bordering areas, because of their central location and the fact that they can be reached quite easily. The Brienzersee, a bit smaller, is closed-in between two ranges of mountains. There are some small but beautiful villages on both the northern and the southern shores, which can be a good place to enjoy your vacation. The town of Brienz is very well known for their wood carving.
South of the Thunersee the Kandertal valley begins. This valley is the gateway of the Lφtschberg route to Wallis. There are many hiking opportunities in these areas and valleys such as the Gasterntal valley. The most important towns are Frutigen, in the centre of the valley, and Kandersteg, at the entrance of the tunnel to Wallis. Many trains to the city of Brig and on to Italy run through this tunnel. The road ends in Kandersteg and here you will be able to put your car on special car trains which can take you to Wallis. The Simmental valley with towns like Zweisimmen and Lenk are less well-known but they’re also a beautiful part of the Bernese Oberland.

Hi Ann,
This place is beautiful! The green grass is very well saturated and the little cottages dot the are very nicely. Effective point of view to capture the stormy weather in the background and create a contrast. Thanks Ann :-)

Hello Ann
It's a perfect illustration for the Swiss landscapes.
A really pleasant composition, in a perfect vertical format to accentuate the difference in levels. Very well thought.
The green tones seem to be a little harsh but that creates a strong contrast with the grey sky and makes a bright image.
I don't know if it was possible, but perhaps it would have been interesting to move just a little on the right to have the chalet in its whole and to leave more space to the tree in the foreground. Just my vision, but nothing important.
Very nice picture.
Regards
Karine

Hi Ann
Nice repetition of the wooden chalets dotted around the green hills, with superb colour, sharpness & high pov. I like the low cloud spilling over the lip of the distant cliffs. Tfs!

hi Ann,
even without sunshine the place looks idyllic, the lush green feels fresh and fertile, and the tiny houses could be homes for some dwarfs or smurfs :) vertical format works well to emphasise the V-shape of the valley. nice work.

Kristine

Hello Ann,
A lovely view indeed. You would expect to see the family Von Trapp there. But no, they were from Austria...
Well done.

Ann,
Another typically Swiss Bliss image, so fairy tale like, sometimes you wonder if it's real, or do they just plan the whole country like this to attract tourist, and actually they kind of do according to my Swiss friend. The government do subsidize the farmers so they keep they farm green with cows and little house and keep up the landscape, and that's why every village you pass through, it's all picture perfect. I don't know how much of it is true. But it sure looks pretty the whole country. Beautiful shot, Not sure if the green is a little over saturated from my monitor. Thanks Ann, and have a good weekend.

Hi Ann, it's like a picture book, you're right. Great use of vertical framing to emphasise the height of this place. The tones and saturation are superb. TFS, Lisa.

Hi Ann,
Switzerland in all of its beauty! The houses, the mountains, I just love this country and it`s a paradise for every serious landscape photographer. Your shot is beautiful, I even like the dark sky, it somehow suits the overall atmosphere of the shot. Composition is very good and so is the sharpness. I jsut noticed some cromatic aberrations around the edges of the distant mountain, but it`s not bad and almost unnoticed. Great shot, so typically Swiss!
Take care
Mark

Hi Ann,
It looks like a fairytale indeed, matching perfectly the idealised idea of an alpine view that most of us have. If you had a little girl running on the grass, too many people would remember Heidi and if it was a group accompanied by a young woman they would remember "The Sound of Music".
The POV and the light are gorgeous and you took very good profit of them to produce a very attractive photo. I like the alignment of log cabins that leads the eye to the valley bellow. Then it's irresistible to climb to the upper rocky part immersed by the shadow. The contrast of the sun in the FG and the dark sky is beautiful also.
Regards, Josι.

Bonjour Ann,

Hello Ann!
Switzerland is truly a dream-Country! I was lucky to visit it in 2005 and fell in love completely with it! This picture of yours is so good, with the best choice for vertical format, viewpoint and composition! Colors are naturally beautiful! Brightness is at the right point! Green Switzerland, but still full of mountain landscapes and unforgettable bucolism! TFS - Congratulations!
Best regards,
Neyvan

Ann, talk about post card, this is exactly like that, and great too. Color and detail are super but the composition is really fine, especially considering shooting it on the fly. Great capture.

Hello Ann,
Very nice landscape and scenery around Grindelwald. I was walking from Schynige Platte to Bachalpsee and down to Grindelwald via Waldspitze and Bort. The waterfall as seen in your photo must be hidden from view by the trail I took. But I did see a few smaller waterfalls along the way. I remember crossing that stream at the lower part of the valley near Bort. Nice greenery and Swiss cottages. Well exposed sky and great depth. Regards. Latiff.
