Photographer's Note
A photo taken during the 2005 TE meeting in Geneva during the visit of Yann Arthus Bertrand's exhibition. This girl is in front of the photo of Pripriat, the abandoned city near the nuclear power station of Tchernobyl, Ukraine.
The Chernobyl disaster occurred at 01:23 a.m. (local time) on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. It is regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Because there was no containment building, a plume of radioactive fallout drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, the British Isles, and eastern North America. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. About 60% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus according to official post-Sovietic data. According to the 2006 TORCH report, half of the radioactive fallout landed outside those three Soviet republics. The disaster released over 400 times more radiation than the atomic bomb of Hiroshima. Hello Quentin,
je me souviens bien de cette photo que tu avais soumise pour le mini-concours.
J'avais beaucoup aimé, comme la superbe photo de l'homme au chapeau d'ailleurs.
C'est nickel de la ressortir maintenant pour coller à l'actualité.
J'aime bien ton cadrage serré, on peut s'imaginer que cette (jolie) fille soit un peu comme un souverain regardant ses sujets de haut.

I remember when we (in greece) heard about the Chernobyl disaster.
It was some time after easter time. I remember that everybody was saying that the rain that fall that day was propably coz of the radation. After that i remember the panic. Everybody was running to the market and were buying canned milk and food supplies. In two days the super market racks were totally empty.

Ouais...quelle catastrophe incroyable. Une belle photo, avec une bonne ambiance. Mais d'où vient cette zone d'ombre à la droite? On ne dirait pas que c'est naturel et c'est, selon moi, très dérangeant. Je l'aurais coupé pour faire un format carré. Dommage, car le reste est excellent. Mais tout est une question d'opinion, bien sûr...

Hi Quentin!
Although there are some "technical faults" in your composition, the POV is very interesting! The idea of "time" ("20 years later") is very well suggested by the two "levels" in your comp.: 1.the young girl in the foreground, captured in colour (=present time) in contrast with 2.the almost black&white background, the desolated, abandoned city (=the past). So, new generations "overlooking" a part of the world history!
Once again, congratulations for your inspired POV!

What I like here is the nice blonde hair of the girl which is a great contrast against the darkness of this tragedy in the picture.

Je trouve cette ville fantôme impressionnante par le sentiment de désolation qu'elle me procure. Pas le charme ici des ruines de maisonnettes en bois témoignant de la conquête de l'Ouest. Le béton perdure, la configuration des quartiers reste figée, le paysage urbain s'arrête simplement de muter et de grouiller. Seule la neige va et vient maintenant, les flocons voltigeant dans l'air faisant l'essentiel du traffic sur les grandes avenues. Je trouve plus engoissant de voir cette ville intacte, mais dépouillée de toute humanité, que de voir une ville détruite par une guerre, mais où des signes d'espoir naissent déjà ici et là.

Ca me rappelle de jolis souvenirs...
Et en plus, c'est excellent, paske je me souviens avoir pris pratiquement la même photo, avec la meme miss, par contre moi je l'avais bien grillée.
Maintenant revenons à ta photo. J'aime bien cette blonde dans la lumière, dans la "vie", qui contraste devant cette désolation qu'est cet endroit photographié.
Une belle image pour ces 20ans, bel homage.

Very interesting photo. Strong contrasts, increases the somber context. Chernobyl...many were and are still heavily affected by it.

I like this point of view. Your lighting is interesting and helps to highlight the person viewing the exhibit and the exhibit itself (except for the shadow on the right).
Thank you for posting this and for your note, which provides good background information for anyone who may have been too young to remember or know about this event.
