Alcántara is a municipality of the Extremaduran province of Cáceres (Spain), placed in the left shore of the river Tagus, in his confluence with the river Alagón, next to Portugal. His modern name there comes from the Arab term Al Qantarat, who wants to say The Bridge due to the Roman bridge placed in his precincts. It is a capital of the Region of Alcántara.
The " Bronze of Alcántara ", also call " Tabulates Alcantarensis ", the year 1983 was found in the zone of the Scaffolding of the Order (inside the municipal term), he gathers the capitulation of the people indigenous to the seanocos before the Romans. It survives in the Museum of Cáceres.

The city was reconquered to the Arabs by Alfonso IX of León, in 1221. The Order of Alcántara was founded here in 1176.

On the river there finds a Roman bridge of six arches, of 194 m long, 8 of breadth and 61 of maximum height, constructed in 104 in times of the emperor Trajano (in whose honor erected an arch of victory in the central part of the bridge). Destroyed by the Frenchmen in the War of the Independence, at present it is bellamente illuminated in the night. In the left shore there is the small one moderate you Roman.

Some hundreds of meters up-stream from the bridge there is the Reservoir of Alcántara (José Maria Oriol crosses), with a maximum capacity of 3.160 Hm3 which principal destination is the production of electrical energy, the biggest of Spain for his length and the second one for capacity after the reservoir of The Serenade.

Another monument visitable is the Conventual one of San Benito, restored building that in the past was a residence of the Military Order of Alcántara up to the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1835; at present the head office of the Foundation is San Benito of Alcántara.

To the exit of the people, in direction of the Bridge and the reservoir, they can turn the ruins of an ancient bridge of stone today destroyed: only two arches exist.

Photo done during a gray and rainy evening but in his west the sun did act of presence and offered a few nice colors.
